SMART STUFF | TIPS AND TRICKS | TRAVEL |..1..2..3 Lost and found. Keep a recent photo of your spouse and child with you in your wallet or bag in case you get separated in a crowd whilst abroad. Make sure your spouse does the same. [Via] Serious safety tip. When going home after a trip, always lock your luggage after you're finished packing. This prevents somebody from stealing something from your case (which you won't notice until you come home) and, perhaps even more important, keeps someone from putting something illegal into your case and using you as a mule for drugs etc. This is especially important in countries like Thailand, where punishments for drug related crimes can be severe indeed. [Via] Emergency plastic gloves. Pack a roll of plastic sandwich bags. They can be used for wet swim-wear, emergency sink plugs, "extras" from the breakfast buffet, or as disposable gloves for yukky jobs and hundreds of other uses, including sandwiches of course. [Via] Always pack some ear plugs. If your hotel turns out to be noisy, or the people upstairs like rearranging the furniture, you will still get a good night's sleep thanks to the earplugs. They are also useful to block out background noise at airports and on the plane. Of all the earplugs we have tried so far, the McKeon silicone ones have proved to be the best. They are about USD 6:- for six pair on Amazon Bring a copy of your eyeglass prescription. Wear glasses? Photocopy your prescription and take it with you (or make a scan and e-mail it to yourself.) If you have a website or a blog, make a new page and post your eyeglass prescription there and make a note of the URL. Chances are you don't need to replace your glasses, but if you do you'd want them to be exactly like the old ones, yes? See also the related post on how to keep a copy of your passport handy. [Via] Pack liquid stuff in separate plastic bags. Pack items such as suntan lotion, moisturizer and perfume into individual plastic bags, just in case your suitcase gets smashed or the contents leak. A little extra work, but it sure beats having your entire travel outfit smeared in lotion. Packing them in separate bags saves you from having your deodorant smeared with lotion, too. [Via] Re-use silica gel packs to protect your stuff. Rather than throwing out those silica packets you get in the boxes of purchased electronics, save a few for when you travel to humid climates. Toss them into camera bags, emergency supply packs, cell phone bags, etc, to keep them dry. Humidity damage to electronics (digital cameras, mp3 players, cell phones, etc.) can be very expensive to repair; matches, aspirin, and emergency food can become useless or spoil when sitting around in a humid bag for hours at a time. How to get the plane seat you want. When all that is left are the middle seats on the plane, ask the person at the counter if you can be seated between two people with the same last name. Typically they will be family members traveling together and hoping to claim the whole row. If you split them up they will offer you a trade, and you'll wind up by the window or on the aisle. Dry your toothbrush before packing it. To avoid having to pack a damp toothbrush (or anything else) when departing, use the hotel hairdryer to dry your items. Brush your teeth with a toothbrush that has sat wet in a suitcase for three days and you'll immediately see the value of this trick. Take your oldest clothes on your trip. When going on a trip, bring along your oldest socks, underwear and sleep-wear - the clothes you should have gotten rid of months ago. Then, after you wear them, just throw them out. Now you won’t have to carry dirty clothes around, nor wash them when you get home. Also, you'll have more room in your luggage for any souvenirs you pick up. Bathroom trick. While traveling the rural areas of third-world countries, you may come across some very primitive toilet situations. To mask unpleasant odors, carry a mentholated chap stick and rub it under your nose before using the facilities - it works wonders.
