Getting rid of stains in sink and bathtub. If you've got blue-green stains, they're likely caused by minerals in water from dripping faucets. Use a vitreous enamel cleaner to clean enameled tubs or sinks. If you've got rust marks, remove them by using a commercial bath-stain remover that contains a scale remover. If hard-water stains are your problem, get rid of these with a vitreous enamel cleaner (for enameled surfaces) or a cream cleaner (for acrylic surfaces). For tidemarks rub them with turpentine (okay for enamel or acrylic sinks and tubs), and then rinse with a dishwashing liquid solution. [Via] Removing coffee stains. It is almost imposible to get spilled coffee off an item once it has dried, but it can be done. The trick is to pour more coffee onto the item the freshly brewed java will dissolve the dried coffee, allowing you to rinse them both off with water. Hammering in a nail without splitting the wood. When the shank of a nail penetrates wood it pushes the wood fibers apart, often creating enough force to split the grain especially within inches of the end. To prevent this, blunt the pointed end of the nail prior to use by tapping it a few times with the hammer. Now, when you first drive it into the wood, it will punch out a few wood cells, instead of just sliding between them, as it would if it was sharp. This will relieve pressure from the shank, and the board is unlikely to split. Removing candle wax. A very easy and practical way to remove wax spilled onto material is to first scrape the excess wax off of the material (a credit card works nicely), put butcher paper or newspaper over the spill, and place a warm iron on the paper. The wax should melt and transfer to the paper. This also works well for carpet and some upholstery. Extend the life of cut flowers. You can extend the life of cut flowers by putting aspirin or 7-up in the water. The asprin lowers the Ph of the water, while the 7-Up provides nourishment in the form of sugar. Use a comb to hold small nails when hammering. Use a small tooth comb to hold small nails in place when hammering. This will keep your thumb and other fingers out of harm's way. Removing grease stains. Use cornmeal to absorb grease stains on light-colored fabric or upholstery. Pour on enough to cover the soiled area and let sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Vacuum to remove the grains. Via Real Simple. Cutting ceramic tiles. When measuring a tile to cut it flush to a wall, you don't need a tape measure or ruler. Just flip the tile face down and butt it up against the wall. Mark it where it meets the tile you have already laid. That is where you should cut. When you flip it over again face up, the cut edge will be against the wall and it should be a perfect fit. Keeping silver shiny. To help prevent the tarnishing of silver jewelry, place a stick of white blackboard chalk in the drawer or jewelry box to absorb the sulfur compounds that cause silver to blacken. Washing windows. Wash each side of a window in a different direction, e.g. left-right in the inside, up-down on the outside. Afterwards, if you see any streaks, you'll immediately know what side of the glass they are on. Preserving paint. Before resealing a can of paint, blow one deep breath into the can and close it quickly. You'll fill it with carbon dioxide, which will keep the paint from oxidizing prevent it from developing the "skin" that paint gets when it sits a while. Aquarium cleaner. A strong magnet inside of a rag or sponge placed on the inside of the tank can be guided around with another strong magnet from the outside.
