| SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | TOOLS |..<.....7..8..9..10..11.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff tools section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for toolbox and workshop. ![]() Bicycle tool with built-in CO2 tyre inflator. The Blackburn AirFix sports nine different bike tools all bundled around a carbon dioxide (CO2) tyre inflator. It has a pressure reglulator to keep you from over-inflating your tyres, and a safety switch to keep it from going off in your pants. The rest of the goodies are 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm Hex's, a Torx T-25, chain tool, tyre tool, and both Phillips and plain flat screwdrivers. The miracle machine is charged with 16 gram Blackburn or Innovations cartridges. The AirFix is USD 39:99 on Amazon. Via Everything and Nothing. 15 March 2006 ![]() Not on your Leatherman. Leatherman, Swiss Army and SOG are all fine products, but this must be the mother of all combination tools. An old fashioned flat screwdriver, an ordinary plier/wire cutter and a wrench. Could it be cooler? Farmer-pliers via Book of Joe. 7 March 2006 ![]() Adventures with the EarLight flashlight - a true story. We bought one of these EarLite things a couple of years ago in the US, but we had all but forgotten about it until the other day, when it really got a chance to show us what it was made of. The old daisy-chain of Christmas lights had to be put up on the balcony handrail, and of course we managed to put off the job until daylight was gone. This is not all that hard, since lights out for the day occur at about 15.30 hrs over here at this time of year (thats 3.30 PM if you are on the AM/PM clock). Well, after some freezing wrestling with the tangled cables, there it was in all it's glory. Sort of, anyway, since part of the chain remained dark. Luckily, the chain is made in sections, and only 16 lights out of 100 had to be examined. When this happens you can go about fixing it in different ways. The quick-fix method calls for replacing all the lamps and checking for the broken one in the house afterwards. But to do that we would have needed 16 spare lamps we did not have. Back to checking which one was broken; not a very pleasant job in the freezing darkness. These lamps are really tiny. That was when we remembered the EarLite. We got it and less than a minute later we had found the offending lamp. Brilliant. Cannot remember where we got it (could have been at the Brookstone store in Santa Monica), but a similar light is USD 12:99 on Amazon. 19 December 2005 ![]() Liquid electrical tape. We could find any number of uses for this stuff. We like to fool around with 12V lighting around the house (we have decided to leave the 230V stuff to the electricians), and with some of this we would be set to go. Imagine being able to fix a damaged section without cutting the cable. This goo is waterproof and remains flexible after drying. It would work in the car, boat, trailer and even the caravan if we had any of these RVs. available at Sporty's for USD 7:95 for 4 oz. or at Amazon for USD 5:99 for a 4 oz. bottle. Via Book of Joe. 10 December 2005 ![]() Self opening scissors. Reader Magnus I. B. have contributed the following tip and review. Magnus writes (in our translation/Ed.): "Swedish Stirex makes a clever pair of scissors. No loops to wiggle your thumb and forefinger into, just grip and cut. Unlike other self opening scissors, this one has no dirt collecting spiral spring, which makes it ideal in the kitchen. The intended buyers for these scissors are people with muscle atrophy or some other disability, but why could not the rest of us benefit from this convenience, too? :-) I have two of these at home (that way one is always available) since five or six years back. The leaf spring can be turned around, too, so it will not get exhausted. Available at Apoteket (Swedish pharmacy /Ed.). At Elfa (electronics specialist /Ed.), search for stirex), there are variants made for tech use, like pliers, wire cutters and ESD-protected scissors. I have no personal experience with these, though." Thank you, Magnus! There is not much to add, other than maybe that us south-paws are especially pleased to find a way to avoid those "right-hand-ergonomical" scissors that never fit and are a pain to use. Next stop is the pharmacy! /Ed. 1 December 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |..<.....7..8..9..10..11.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
