| SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | TOOLS |..<.....6..7..8..9..10.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff tools section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for toolbox and workshop. ![]() A washer screwdriver. It looks like a one inch washer or maybe a subway-token, but it is really a very versatile and useful pocket-size screwdriver. The thing that makes it so smart is the ramped edge that varies in thickness from 0.02 in. to 0.9 in. This little miracle can replace (and save) a number of coins, kitchen knives, teaspoons or whatever it is that you use (and ruin) when the odd screw in the house has to be tightened. We did it ourselves the other day, dammit. Table knives just are not strong enough, as we should have known. These steel screwdriver washers are sold in bags of twelve, since they are supposed to be everywhere; in your kitchen drawers, in your car, in your pocket, on your key ring. You name it. And believe us, one of these could do wonders for the peace and quiet around the house. They are USD 6:95 for 12 at the Lee Valley web store. 25 November 2005 ![]() Pocket sized tool kit. Our steady readers know that we love these little toolkits. We just have a hard time resisting them. This is the Palm Pal, a smart tool that integrates fourteen (unless we are mistaken) different wrenches in one handy pocket sized package. It weighs just 16 oz. (some 450 grams) and measures 3,25" (about 8 cm's) but it can help you handle nuts and bolts in dimensions from 3/8” to 3/4” and 8 to 19 mm). The inches on one side and the mm's on the other. Will set you back USD 14:95 at Herrington. Via Book of Joe. 16 November 2005 ![]() Extra heavy duty velcro. They are not really Velcro, even though they look pretty much the same at first glance. If you look close enough, you will notice that this fastener strip does not have the usual hooks and loops of Velcro, but instead something that most of all resembles tiny, tiny mushrooms. They are not soft like Velcro, either, but harder and both sides are the same. Just like the Velcro hooks, though, there are thousands of the little mushrooms ready to hook on to each other once they are properly placed. They are reportedly used mostly for industrial applications, but they should come in useful for any purpose where you want something to be really tight. They are made by 3M (who else?), called the 3M Dual Lock Recloseable Fastener Tape and they are USD 11:50 for 10 ft. Available at iTapestore and Amazon among other places. 5 November 2005 ![]() The 90° drill conversion. Sometimes there is just not enough space. In those instances this smart invention could come in handy. All you have to do is attach the conversion kit to your power drill's chuck, the drill bit to the conversion piece's own chuck, and drill away to your heart's content. Can be mounted on both left and right, and works equally well for sanding or polishing. Available at Sporty's for USD 14:95. 3 November 2005 ![]() Digital labeling tape. This tape is thought to be a simple and cheap d-i-y sign system. It reminds us a lot of some in-store signs where the current price is displayed like this. The idea is that you use a permanent marker to black out the not-wanted parts of the 14 part digital grid. At present the tape is reported to be available at Walther Koenig booksellers in Germany, some Designshops in Berlin and Cologne, and at the Design Museum and MAGMA in London. Pick up a roll next time you go to London. Design by Hannes Koch. The tape is GBP 8:99 (approx. USD 16:-) for a roll of 65 meters (about 213 ft.). How cheap that is can be debated, but it does seem quite simple anyway...
