| SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | TOOLS |..<.....11..12..13..14..15.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff tools section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for toolbox and workshop. ![]() Drywall hooks that don't make crater-like holes. Most (or at least anyone living in a newer home) have one or more walls covered with drywall plasterboard. If you are one of these people, you have probably encountered the problem of hanging things on the walls, like pictures, large mirrors, bookcases, etc. Plasterboard can be pretty brittle, but also surprisingly strong if you do it right. So what is right? Our all time favorite (acting on the principle of "better ten times too strong than just a teensy weensy bit too weak") is the Molly expansion plug, but a big fat Molly can sometimes seem to be a touch of over-kill for just a picture frame or a mirror. In those cases maybe this thread hook, the Hercules Hook, can be just the thing. It can, according to the site, be used to hang stuff up to 150 lb. without using any tools, and leaving only a small pinprick hole in the wall (everybody who has ever tried to remove a Molly plug knows what we are saying, here). Ten Hercules Hooks are USD 9:95 on Amazon 26 September 2006 ![]() Masking tape alignment tool. This special masking tape alignment tool makes it easier to mask around windows, doors, corners, edges and other places where it usually is had to get the tape to fit just right. It would be great for us, since we have a hard time getting the tape straight. The machine can be used with either left or right hand and it accepts masking tape between 3/4" and 2" wide. USD 20:- at Sporty's. 18 September 2006 ![]() Padlock with key stash. We have posted on the idea of a key stash before, so it is not brand spanking new. But we do think it is pretty smart, so here goes again. It is quite simply a pad lock with some extra space for a key or maybe som rolled up paper money, or something else you want available (but not too available). It is USD 30:- at Sporty's. 15 September 2006 ![]() Hammer with a magnetic track for the nail. This would be interesting to try out in real life. Would the nail really stay in the magnetic track when you give it a whack? If it does work as advertised, it would save innumerable thumbs and perhaps even more bad language. It is the Oxo Good Grips 16 oz. Rip Claw Hammer (phew!) and besides the nail track it sports a softish top on the hammer head to spare the wall when you pull nails. That is pretty smart, too. The hammer is USD 15:- on OXO. Via Monkeyzen (in Spanish) and Chiquiworld (also Spanish). 14 September 2006 ![]() The Solo lift. From the website: "The Solo Lift enables you to lift and carry a box with only one hand! No preparation of the box is needed. Simply grab the box using the Solo Lift and go. The box is carried at your side, allowing you to see what is front of you, such as a curbs, puddles or steps. You also have one hand free to open doors, press elevator buttons or hold handrails." Wow. How can this work? From Active Forever at USD 24:95 a piece.
