Welcome to the Smart Stuff section with smart gadgets, inventions and ideas that may make life in the Third World safer and easier. Below, and on the other pages, you'll find our constantly updated archive of the world's smartest inventions for places without electricity or reliable water supply.

Construction kit refugee radio by Mareike Gast
Construction kit refugee radio.
Information via radio can be crucial in times of crises or natural disasters. Radio is relatively cheap and simple to produce, and even a weak transmitter can reach a lot of people with vital information. But getting radio receivers to refugees and disaster stricken areas is not easy, not to mention getting power or batteries in sufficient numbers. German designer Mareike Gast has designed a possible solution. It is a simple and cheap crystal radio receiver in a kit. Thanks to the crystal technology the set is independent of outside power; it gets all the juice it needs from the radio waves themselves, just like the radios of old. Everything comes in a small box with assembly instructions printed on the box itself.

LifeStraw water purification device

Possibly the most important invention in our time.
It's called LifeStraw and may well prove to be the invention that saves more lives than anything since penicillin. The LifeStraw is a plastic tube with a built in water purification filter, 25 cm long and 29 mm in diameter, meant to let you drink water that unfiltered would be a potential killer. The most common cause of premature death in the developed part of the world is traffic accidents, followed by a number of diseases caused by our over indulgent lifestyle. In the world as a whole, though, the most common killer is bacteria such as Typhoid, Cholera, e.coli, Salmonella and others. Millions of people die every year because they lack clean water. And until now there has not been a lot we have been able to do, since water purification is costly, requires electrical power, spare parts, training, and so on.

With the LifeStraw this may change. The LifeStraw is cheap, needs no power, no training, no service, and is said to be able to filter up to 700 liters of water before it should be replaced. 700 liters is roughly what one person drinks per year. The tube has been tested positively on water borne bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus. Now, if we could just find a way to manufacture and distribute these LifeStraws in sufficient numbers to the world's trouble areas, millions of lives could possibly be saved.

The idea comes originally from Dane
Torben Vestergaard Frandsen, and has been developed in cooperation with The Carter Center, Rob Fleuren of Holland and Moshe Frommer of Israel. LifeStraw has furthermore been nominated to the Danish Index Awards, an award for design with the potential to improve life for large groups of people. Via Gizmag.

Hand cranked cell phone charger
Hand cranked cellphone charger.
This handy little hand cranked cellphone charger could save any holiday. God forbid that your little friend should run out of juice. At Dino, who sells this little gadget with adapters for Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, Siemens and Samsung, they claim that three minutes of cranking should give you equal time for yada-yada. All for SEK 149:- (approx. USD 15:-). The more you work the more you can chatter, but what if you could hook the thing up to that wheel thing the kid's hamster runs around in... Just a thought.
