SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | SWEDISH |..<.....8..9..10..11..12.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff Swedish section with smart gadgets, inventions and ideas by Swedish people. Below, and on the other pages, you'll find our constantly updated archive of the world's smartest Swedish inventions. ![]() New style picnic cutlery. This clever set of pic-nic cutlery is the brain-child of Mr. Glen Roll. Glen is an avid outdoors man and likes to bring his lunch into the wild. However, he thought all the cutlery sets he could find had the same irritating flaw; a small but sharp knob on the knives where the set would be joined together for packing and transport. This knob chafed his hand on several occations, but since it was a practical feature, just taking a hacksaw to it would only solve one problem while creating another. Something else had to thought out. Glen started thinking, and finally came up with a cutlery kit, not only minus the irritating little knob, but also with an even smarter (our opinion) way of fastening them together, plus a new sleek look. The whole idea revolves around the cylidrical spoon handle. Insert the fork handle-first from the business end of the spoon, and the knife from the back, and you have a neat package that will not get caught on stuff in your pack, or chafe your hand when you have your well deserved after hike outdoor lunch. Designer Glenn Roll. Via Patent och Registreringverket (Swedish Patent's Office). Sorry, we do not yet know if this set is in production, and if so, where it is sold. But. as soon as we know, you will know. Stay tuned. /Ed 15 december 2005 ![]() The tidy nut cracker. The designers behind this smart nut cracker are Johan Norin and Erik von Schoultz. With the Drosselmeyer nut cracker they have created a tool that we think kicks nut cracker butt. This is in part because we do not risk getting our fingers between a nut and a hard place, partly because preventing nut fragments from getting all over floor seems to be quite easy, and also in part because it looks good. Insert nut into the cone shaped part, cover the top with one hand, and squeeze the handle with the other. Done. Repeat. Maybe not the Christmas Gift of the Year, but hey, what is? The Drosselmeyer is available in finns i red, black or white at SEK 295:- (about USD 37:-) from Designtorget among other stores. 14 December 2005 ![]() Bicycle baggage rack extender. Any bicyclist would have noticed how the rack often is too narrow for the stuff you want to bring along. One solution could be to tie a box to the rack, but this can become too permanent, and it is not very elegant. This could be a better way. The Butterfly baggage rack enlarger by Désirée Lindholm. The invention came to her after her bag had dropped from her bicycle rack one time too many. The idea is very simple. It is one of those "why did I not...."-ideas. The Butterfly is a contraption that attaches to the bicycle rack and provides two swing-wings to make the rack larger when required. When not, the wings fold and are out of the way. It is SEK 249:- (approx. USD 36:-) on Lastahojen.se (Swedish only). 11 December 2005 ![]() Self opening scissors. Reader Magnus I. B. have contributed the following tip and review. Magnus writes (in our translation/Ed.): "Swedish Stirex makes a clever pair of scissors. No loops to wiggle your thumb and forefinger into, just grip and cut. Unlike other self opening scissors, this one has no dirt collecting spiral spring, which makes it ideal in the kitchen. The intended buyers for these scissors are people with muscle atrophy or some other disability, but why could not the rest of us benefit from this convenience, too? :-) I have two of these at home (that way one is always available) since five or six years back. The leaf spring can be turned around, too, so it will not get exhausted. Available at Apoteket (Swedish pharmacy /Ed.). At Elfa (electronics specialist /Ed.), search for stirex), there are variants made for tech use, like pliers, wire cutters and ESD-protected scissors. I have no personal experience with these, though." Thank you, Magnus! There is not much to add, other than maybe that us south-paws are especially plased to find a way to avoid those "right-hand-ergonomical" scissors that never fit and are a pain to use. Next stop is the pharmacy! /Ed. 1 December 2005 ![]() The Book Blanket sleeved blanket. Last week end we visited the Christmas market at Steninge Palace in Märsta. We went not so much for the Christmas stuff, but for the show of products by Swedish female inventors and designers. Among other things, we found the smart button saver, new designs by Camilla Martelius and a lot of other smart and fun stuff that we will have reason to come back to in the future. One of the inventions we cannot wait to post is the clever Book Blanket by Inger Larsson. The Book Blanket is a nice, soft and cozy fleece blanket with sleeves to let you read a good book without getting your shoulders and arms cold. Genious, we say. 28 November 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |..<.....8..9..10..11..12.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
