| SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | SOLAR |.Next > Welcome to the Smart Stuff solar power section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas concerning solar power. ![]() Some solar light for those that have no power. Here's a smart project to bring solar powered lighting to those, whose lives do not consist of flicking off-and-on illumination from the grid. With the Portable Light Project staff and students from the University of Michigan, alongside architect firm Kennedy & Violich are seeking to offer affordable electric light to the nomadic Huichol people from Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains. Solar panels, high brightness light emitting diodes (HBLEDs) and traditional weaving are all being combined into functioning prototypes. One such design has been a folding stool, that children can sit on and drape soft lit fabric over their knee while they read and write at night. More on Portable Light. Via Core 77. 28 January 2006 ![]() Solar powered lighter. This is claimed to be the only pocket sized solar lighter in the world, and that may very well be true. We can honestly say we have never seen any smaller. (We have not actually seen any pocket sized solar lighters at all, but that may well be besides the point.) We did however try to make our own solar dish this spring after we had read about a fascinating experiment on Trackertrail. We were not very successful, though. Maybe we could not work up the right shine, or maybe the sun was not bright enough. After this, we are now thinking of taking the easy way out and order one of these instead. It is simply a highly polished stainless parabolic dish, adjusted to concentrate the sun's heat at the exact focal point. Made for outdoor life, and as a survival tool. Available at Sundance Solar, right now on sale at USD 9:95. Via Treehugger. 13 November 2005 ![]() Solar light tiles for your driveway. For those among us who want a lighted garden path, but do not want to dig up the lawn to lay the cables, here is an alternative. Say hello to the SolarBrick solar powered light tiles. The SolarBrick is a 60 mm (about 2.4 inches) thick polycarbonate tile with four LED lights, a solar cell and something called a capacitor, a device that apparently does the job of a rechargeable battery, only better, since it does not have to be changed every 3-4 years. The SolarBrick is said to deliver twelve hours of light in exchange for one hour of sunlight or eight in the shade. The tiles are strong enough to be driven over, and are supposed to last ten years without maintenance. They are available with blue, green, orange, white, red or amber light. We have found them at Solar Wereld in Holland at EUR 195:- (ca SEK 1.825:-) a piece. Expensive? Maybe, but how cool would it be? 14 October 2005 ![]() Solar powered bus shelter. They are called iShelters (sic!), and the light goes on as soon as someone steps inside. They are developed by the Canadian company Carmanah Technologies and they use LED lighting powered by solar cells. These bus shelters are reportedly already in use in Edinburgh, Chicago and Seattle, plus cities in Canada. In addition, the company is supposed to have won a contract to install 1,200 of them in the greater London area. Now we would like to know what SL (Stockholm Public Transport) thinks.
