SMART STUFF #9, VOLUME 2. SEPTEMBER 2006 |..1..2..3..4..5![]() Better marinating in vacuum. We have been told that a vacuum (or in any case a lower than normal air pressure) will enhance marinating of meat. The lower pressure is supposed to open up the pores and fibers of the meat and let the marinating fluid in. That is the basic idea behind this new marinating bowl with pressure tight lid from Dutch Vacuvin. Vacuvin is probably better known for their vacuum wine saver. This is a further development of the same technology, but instead of pumping the air out of a bottle you use a whole bowl. How much it is, we do not know at this time, but we found it in Frelina Pring's booth at Formex yesterday... 4 September 2006 A letter on the two-wheeled wheel barrow... After our post on the two wheeled wheel barrows (first the Canadian, and then the Swedish), we have had an e-mail from Smart Stuff reader Ambar R. in New Delhi, India. He writes: "I do not know what kind of wheel barrows are common in Europe or the U.S., but here in India, I see two wheeled varieties everywhere. I live in New Delhi, and over here I have not seen a wheel barrow w/o two wheels." Ambar also says he'll try to get a picture of the Indian version of the wheel barrow over to us. Thanks, Ambar, for the mail and the information! 4 September 2006 ![]() ![]() The Contactboxen charger hider has a brother. We mentioned the Contactboxen already in January, when we posted on the table top version (right) with a built-in power splitter and room for six chargers under its oak lid. Our verdict then was that the box needed some "design massage", but that it kicked the competition's behind (that would be the Multipot) since it offered room for more chargers at a lower price. Today, on the Formex exhibition's last day, we got a minute with the creator of the Contactboxen, Anna Falkenmark, who told us that the box has been given a design make over by well known Swedish designer Lars Hall, and that the wall mounted version is ready for market. The wall mounted version our favorite, since it frees up table space. 3 September 2006 ![]() Rolling pin spacers. The spacers make sure the rolling pin stays at an even distance from the counter surface. That way the thickness of the dough will be exact and even. Put one ring at each end of the rolling pin and roll away. The rings are sold in sets of four; 1/16", 1/8", 1/4" and 3/8" and fits rolling pins between 1.5" and 3" diameter. available on Amazon at USD 7:95 a set. Via Kitchen Contraptions. 2 September 2006 ![]() Cover the gap between stove and counter. How did the sides of your stove and kitchen counter look when you last pulled out the stove to clean? Well, yes, you can pull the stove out, at least where we live. Just take care not to damage the power cable. If your stove is a gas-burner, we would suggest even more care. Escaped cooking gas can make one mother of a bang, really. But back to the subject at hand. With this T-shaped cover you can fill the gap between stove and counter and hopefully avoid the muck that collects there. It is called the Kleen Seam, and it is available in polished aluminum or white vinyl. The vinyl version can of course be cut to an exact fit. It is USD 9:99 a piece at Brylane Home. 1 September 2006 Smart stuff August round-up. Among all the smart gadgets, inventions and ideas we have posted during August, we think some deserve an extra mention. Really. That's because we somehow feel that they were a bit more clever that the rest. Here's our very subjective pick of the litter for August 2006: The Solo lift. We have no idea how this works, and we're almost willing to bet you will be as amazed as we are. The Trio-Bike. We found the Danish Trio bicycle sales ready at the Normann showroom in Copenhagen. Three bikes in one; three wheeled transport bike and kid mover of the kind that's so popular in Denmark and an ordinary two-wheeler. Floor savers. It may not sound like a big deal, but these floor savers are die cut to make them fit all kinds of leg sizes. The new Chef'n pepper mill. We have been holding our Vic Firth pump and grind pepper-mill as our favorite from the day we bought it, but now the Vic has been demoted to spot #2. The BistroGrind from Chef'n is the new champ. Expandable coffee table. This is probably the smartest coffee table we have seen. Perfect for the studio apartment or for compact living. Free energy. Many have deemed themselves called through the years. No-one has succeeded. If the Steorn discovery really works, there should be a Nobel Prize waiting for them. But of course they still have to convince all the skeptics that their device really, really can produce more energy than it consumes... 1 September 2006 THIS MONTH HAS MORE PAGES |..1..2..3..4..5 DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
