SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | TRAVEL |..<.....6..7..8..9..10.....>.......................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff travel section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for travel and holidays. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() New water purifuing straw. A while back we wrote a post on the LifeStraw, a smart personal water cleaning device for developing areas in the shape of a (fat) straw. We do not think the LifeStraw is really ready for market, but it looks promising and it will according to plans get a capacity of 700 liters before it needs to be replaced; that equals the yearly consumption of drinking water for one person. What we did not know at the time, but do know now, is that the LifeStraw is not unique (save perhaps the capacity). On the site Core77, who has a large post from an exhibition on safety design at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, we found this product. It is called mizu-Q and is an already existing personal water purifying device, albeit with a capacity of just 100 liters. We have been looking for more information on the mizu-Q, but not even Google can find anything more than a short reference on a blog by someone who bought one in Osaka, Japan. If you know more about water purification using similar products, or have hands-on experience with the mizu-Q, please let us know! Also see the post below. 17 October 2005 ![]() Safety kit for your spare wheel. Core77 is a site we like to visit. The other day they posted a report from a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the exhibition Safe - Design Takes on Risk, featuring all kinds of safety devices for all kinds of emergencies. Go to Core77 and check it out (there is a link to MoMA below, but it does not reveal much). Core77 has an extensive photo report from the exhibition and is well worth looking at. There are lots of smart inventions, like for instance the one here; a safety kit designed to be kept in the unused space in the car's spare wheel. 17 October 2005 ![]() Disposable suitcase locks. Should you lock your soft suitcase with a pad lock, and your bag gets chosen for inspection, there is the definite possibility the officer will just cut your lock open. If you, on the other hand, do not lock your case you will not know if the bag has ben ínspected or searched by thieves. These numbered disposable locks may offer a solution. They will protect your bag from being opened by mistake, and they might protect from opportunistic thieves. If your bag is singled out for inspection, the officer can easily break the lock. This way you will always know if your bag has ben opened. And since these locks are relatively inexpensive, you might opt to lock compartments you have not bothered with before. The locks are sold in different colors, and they are USD 18:- (ca SEK 140:-) for a pack of 30 at Hammacher-Schlemmer. 12 October 2005 ![]() GPS for the SD slot. Globalsat claims they are about to release a GPS device that accommodates everything essential in one single SD card with 512 MB of memory capacity. Well, as far as we can see the antenna (a Sarantel GeoHelix GPS) and some more stuff will be sticking out, but it sure is tiny. This means that basically any smart-phone or PDA with SD support can be transformed into a GPS navigator. We think this is very nice, and we are looking forward to the actual release. The thing is called SD-502 SDIO GPS, if you want to Google it; we have found it for pre order at a couple of sites, but alas no price tag. We will keep looking. If any of you readers out there should find it, please let us know. Via Übergizmo. 27 September 2005 ![]() World's smallest flashlight has a brother. A while ago we reported on what we considered to be the world's smallest flashlight. We could not really imagine a smaller unit than the light that was roughly a third of an ordinary 9V battery i size. and we thought is was crazy smart. The only bad news was the price of USD 24:-. It seems someone else loved that little light, too, because now there is a competitor. It is called Pac Lite and is just as small, has a luminescent top, and it is (of course) a little less expensive. On the other hand the newcomer seems to lag behind in energy conservation. It only gives some 20+ hours of light from a battery, while the old hand cranks out 75. The new kid is GBP 9:99 (ca USD 18:-) at I Want One Of Those. 8 September 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |..<.....6..7..8..9..10.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
