SMART STUFF | ARCHIVES | TRAVEL |..<.....11..12..13..14..15.....>...........USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff travel and holiday section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for travel and vacations. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Sheet soap perfect for travelers. This is actually a soap, or rather fifty soaps in the shape of small paper thin sheets. The idea is you use it as ordinary soap, only one sheet at the time. If you are traveling this means you do not have to carry a wet and sticky soap around after washing. Perfect for the times there is no soap. Available in several different flavors. We got it from the Designtorget shop for SEK 55:- for a box of 50, but they are also available from, among other shops, Beauty of a Site. Here they are USD 6:- (approx. SEK 44:-). 1 May 2006 ![]() Map from Free Hotspot directory. Free Wi-Fi if you know were to look. During our trip recently almost all the time we felt the lack of connection, particularly wireless connection, and specifically free w-lan connection. If we had known about this service, maybe everything would have been different. Here is a directory of (at the time of writing) 9,162 free hotspots all over the world. When we looked, the US was on top of the list with 6,487 free hotspots, and San Francisco was the leading city with 372 spots. As for the rest of the world, Brazil and Argentina are the two best countries with 400 and 387 free hotspots respectively. Sweden, alas, has managed only 3. The available spots are maybe not always the easiest to reach, but we are hoping for lots more in the near future. Meanwhile keeping an eye out for the logo below could be a very good idea, indeed. One of our favorite cities, Barcelona in the north of Spain, (see the map above) have more than three times as many free hotspots as Sweden does! Free Hotspot directory. Via Shiny Shiny. 29 April 2006 A. B.![]() Tie hanger and belt organizer. We have seen the belt organizer (B) before, but at the time we totally missed its brother, the tie organizer (A). Both are (with a collapsible coat hanger cousin) part of firm Orkan's travel acccessories line. All the hangers are designed by David Larsson (more on him on Cool Finds) and they are made in anodized aluminium. The belt hanger was SEK 89:- (approx. USD 12:-) when we saw it last on Resklar. 26 April 2006 A. B. C.![]() The Faraday flashlight. Lately a number of different flashlights has appeared, all based on Michael Faraday's principle of electromagnetic induction, the one where a magnet that passes through a coil of copper wire generates an electric current. Wonder why? Did Faraday have a patent that just expired, or something? Anyway, we think this is a pretty nice idea. Of course it is no perpetuum mobile, but what is? (A) is from Forever Flashlights for USD 25:45 (about SEK 190:-), (B) is from Clas Ohlson for SEK 59:- (about USD 8:-). Art.nr 32-8978. (C) is from Flashlight Center and it is USD 14:70 (about SEK 115:-). Via Uncrate. The stores above are just examples. Our search for "electromagnetic induction flashlight" produced 30,100 hits on Google... 21 April 2006 ![]() Showerhead for your used PET bottle. The time will come when we can chill on the beach again. At least we hope so. And we also hope the weather will be warm enough for us to actually feel the need for this product. The climate we live in... But that is besides the point of this post. Here is the showerhead that fits your PET bottles. So you can cool down in the sun, or rinse off the salt with a little fresh water, or have a shower in the middle of nowhere (providing there is a water supply of course. And if you let it sit in the sun, we bet it will even yield a warm shower before tucking yourself in inside your tent. Design Joe Velluto and made by Coro.
