Useful clamps for different jobs by Jorre van Ast

Useful clamps for different jobs.
The spring loaded clamp is a pretty smart way of fastening things. We have used different lamps and spotlights with clamps for a long time, since the clamps make the spotlights easy to move and for the most time they do not do any damage to whatever they are clamped to. The new clamp ideas above are four in a series of eight called Clampology by industrial designer Jorre van Ast. Above you see the candle holder, the coat hanger, the cable collector and the book end, but there are four more on Jorre van Ast's home page. We are guessing these clamp designs are concepts for now, but they seem smart enough to be brought into production. Via Core 77.

Mail from a concerned reader...
Last week we had this mail from one of our readers, Heikki K., and he thinks the standard of our posts (or rather the standard of the gadgets we've posted on) has deteriorated lately. Here's his mail:

"I have been reading your site for probably a year or so by now. Very interesting stuff and you have been doing a great job. Something has changed recently. You are perhaps under pressure to publish new stuff all the time, and you think that you are too slow doing that. Wrong. Lately you are way too fast, and publishing stuff that is, frankly, not any more clever or interesting at all. Your strength is in "clever" and "interesting" - not in finding that stuff every day. For me it is perfectly ok if you come up with nothing new for a few weeks - I'll come back and check you out once a week or something like that. finding nothing is ok. Finding crap is not ok - after finding non-interesting non-clever stuff for a while, I would come back less and less often. Just post every few days something like "we've been looking but we have not found anything that is really good and we do not want to bother you with trivial stuff" and my guess is that your readers would be very happy with you."

First of all thanks to Heikki K. for taking the time and making the effort to write us. By doing so he's helped us improve the site. Regarding the number of posts on the site, our ambition from the start has been to present one smart gadget, invention or idea per day, except maybe weekends and holidays. For a number of reasons; travel, lack of suitable material, too much else to do, etc, we've not entirely been able to live up to this. We've posted something like 70-75 percent, I think. As far as quality is concerned, we're not sure we agree that the stuff we've posted lately has been less interesting than the stuff we posted a year ago, even though we admit we have less to choose from today. After all we've posted on a lot of inventions during the almost two years we've been active. But all of our readers can't possibly find every post interesting, and every invention posted can't possibly be news to all of our readers. Hopefully though, over time every one of our readers will find a number of interesting gadgets and inventions they have never heard of before. If we're reading our stats correctly, our readership is increasing, so it would seem we're doing something right. However, we'd be very interested to learn if any more of our readers share Heikki's views. It would help us improve the site. Do you think the stuff we've posted has become less interesting lately? Please drop us a line to let us know! /Ed.

We've been pretty busy lately...
We've had our share of both sad and happy things to take care of during the last few weeks, which has meant that we've had less than the usual time for posting on Smart Stuff. We hope you will re-join us, however, when we proceed into November. Among other things, we've visited the female inventor's exhibition at the Tekniska Muséet (Polytechnic Museum) in Stockholm, and we'll be back with some interesting stuff. Women clearly invent other things than men do... /Ed.
