SMART STUFF #10, VOLUME 2. OCTOBER 2006 |..1..2..3..4..5.....>![]() PET bottle top twister. For anyone who ever had trouble opening the often tough bottle tops on PET bottles, we have found a small helping hand on Danish Brix Design. The tool, the patented bottle top opener, simply provides a better grip and better torque when twisting the often hard opened plastic bottle tops on the average PET water- or soda bottles. 6 October 2006 Our two day silence. The temorary stop in our regular posting is due to the fact that half the team has been involved in actual paying work, and the other half has been attending urgen family matters. We hope you'll forgive us the hiatus, and that you'll keep following us now that we're back. /Ed. 6 October 2006 ![]() Locking loop for bicycle helmets. Here is another pretty smart bike gadget, now that we are on the biking track. Everbody must have pondered, at one time or another, what to do with the helmet once you have parked the bike. Kryptonite locks will not go through the vents in the helmet, and that is the case with every wire lock we have tried, too. You do not want to lock it through the chin strap, so the solution is to bring the helmet wherever you go. This helmet locking loop may change all that. Just slip the loop through a vent hole and lock it to the bike with your ordinary lock. The plate makes sure the loop cannot be pulled through without destroying the helmet. The helmet lock "Hjälmsafe" (Helmet Safe) is SEK 39:- (about USD 5:30) on the Haninge Uppfinnareförenings (Haninge Inventor's Ass:n) gadget page Fiffiga Prylar (Clever Gadgets, Swedish only). 3 October 2006 ![]() Inflatable bicycle seat. We suppose everyone has had a sore butt from cycling at one time or another, especially if it has been a while since the last ride. Maybe this invention can solve this embarrassing problem. The air inflatable bicycle seat, or saddle. This one is available in two versions, a wider "classic" model and a narrower "sport" version. It comes from the German firm Airseat and it is sold by, among other places, the Swedish bicycling promotion association webstore. It is SEK 450:- (about USD 61:-) for the "classic". 2 October 2006 ![]() How one "AA" battery can replace a "D" or "C". Let's kick off october with a reader tip. It is from Mikael B., who sends a mail with a link to these battery adapters he found on the Clas Ohlson web shop. With the adapter you can use cheap(er) size "AA" batteries in place of size "D" or "C" in gadgets that need the bigger kind of power source. "I use both the D and C adapters, and they work fine", Michael writes (in our translation). The adapters are SEK 15:- (about USD 2:-) for a 4/pack on sale on the Clas Ohlson web shop. If they should run out, similar adapters are also available on Amazon for USD 4:81 för a 4/pack. Thanks Mikael, for the mail! 1 October 2006 The best on Smart Stuff in September. Among all the smart gadgets, inventions and ideas we've posted in September, there are a few that we feel deserve a second mention. Maybe they're just a touch smarter than the rest. Here they are. Our own highly subjective pick of the litter from September 2006: Self cleaning windows. It sounds almost too good to be true, but here they are. And not a day too soon... The drywall hook that does not leave big holes. We love the Molly plug, but it is pretty hard to remove without leaving a crater sized hole in the drywall. Here's an alternative... The hammer with a magnetic nail track. If you can't get both hands in (or if you keep hitting your own thumb) this hammer should be just the thing... Cooling rod for wine bottles. Freeze the rod, put it into the bottle, and serve a nice cool Chard with a minimum of fuss.... Vacuum device for better marinating. Apparently vacuum (or at least a lower air pressure then normal) helps meat mariniate better and faster. The Vacuvin company have adapted their vacuum tech to a new field... 1 October 2006 First to know. Smart Stuff on e-mail or RSS.
