SMART STUFF #11, VOLUME 2. NOVEMBER 2006 |..1..2..3

Check out the new Smart Stuff Store!

Micro Egg egg cooker for the microwave
Mini omelet in sixty seconds.
We bought one of these microwave egg cookers in the Technical Museum shop the other week, and we have been experimenting with different ways of cooking eggs in it since. The best so far is shredded smoked ham, some grated Parmesan hard cheese, one egg and salt and black pepper. Mix everything in the little egg cooker cup, put the lid on and cook it in the microwave for about 60 seconds on high power. This will produce a mini ham-and-cheese omelet you can have for breakfast. We got it at the museum, but they are surely available from cook shops all over the place. If not, we also found it on Amazon for USD 6:95.

Innova 24/7 emergency flashlight with automatic SOS signal in Morse code

Advanced emergency flashlight.
In the pile of mail that was waiting for us on our return home the other day we found the new issue of Svensk Jakt (the Swedish Hunter's Federation magazine). There we found a review of this smart little flashlight. Made for outdoors use, it is waterproof and has a Lithium battery that does not lose its charge over time and that won't go weak in the cold. It has eight LED lights; four white, two red and two yellow, and the lights can be set to flash in a number of different combinations. Among them is a perfect flashing SOS in Morse code! It can also be used as an ordinary flashlight, but it does not exactly come cheap. The SRP in Sweden is SEK 925:- (approx. USD 134:-). Innova 24/7

Solar powered waterproof bike light
Solar bike light.
This waterproof bike light appeared in our morning paper today, and although we suspect some of our (Swedish) readers also read the same paper, we think the little light is so smart we want to mention it anyway. It is promised to deliver 8 hours of light providing it gets charged with 3 hours of direct sunlight. It is also supposed to charge under an electric light (60W), but there is no mention of the charging time. According to the paper it sells for SEK 195:- (approx. USD 28:-) in stores. On the LockerRoom site it is SEK 230:- (approx. USD 33:-) including Swedish VAT and domestic postage.

Excuse our silence.
We've been away to see to some urgent family matters. Anyone with elderly parents will surely understand. By now most things are in order, the emergency over, and we can resume posting smart stuff. Thanks for your patience.

Vacuum space saving compression bag

Vacuum-bag saves space in the closet.
This is a tip from one of our readers who wishes to remain anonymous. (Anonymous is OK, as long as the editors know who you are.) Here's a piece of the mail (our translation):

"...the vacuum bag ... is like a ziploc bag only with a hole in the bottom that only lets air out. You pack fluffy stuff and roll the bag to force the air out and compress the contents..."

Our tipster had seen bags like these from Japan, and later on the TV-Shop shopping channel. We have seen bags like them in the US, but they were bigger and had to have the air pumped out with a vacuum-cleaner. These smaller bags seems easier to handle, even though they may not take as much stuff as the bigger ones. One version is available from the Swedish TV-Shop at SEK 299:- (approx. USD 42:-) for five bags in different sizes. Another is on Amazon for USD 34:50:- which buys 15 bags in different sizes.

Shoes for Crews no-slip shoesShoes for Crews no-slip shoes
Slip resistant shoes.
The name is Shoes for Crews, and they are supposed to have a special sole that prevents slipping on wet surfaces. We're going to confess right from the start that we have not tried these shoes, but we still think the sole does look quite interesting with it's multiple saip pattern. Maybe these shoes can prove to the just the thing for people working in restaurants, where there's a lot of fluid spillage. There's a lot of different models, the above are just two out of maybe fifty. Available for her, for him, for work, for sports and for more formal occasions. The work shoes are available with steel toes. From USD 30:- and up. Shoes for Crews. Via Cool Tools.
