SMART STUFF #11, VOLUME 2. NOVEMBER 2006 |..1..2..3![]() ![]() Tap with bucket hanger. It does not happen as often as it used to, now that we live in an apartment instead of in a house, but every once in a while we still need to fill a bucket of water. And when you consider all the taps where you have to hold the bucket while it s-l-o-w-l-y fills up with water, this invention seems to be worth keeping a lookout for. The faucet that has wings to hold the bucket. Design by Sahar Batsry, but as far as we can figure, it is still a concept and not in actual production anywhere. Via Design Boom. 4 November 2006 Update Hard drive trouble - sporadic mail and feed service. The drive that we use to edit Smart Stuff and send mail and update the RSS feeds has decided to leave us. Probably for good. So while the drive is being replaced with a new and bigger one and everything is restored from backup, we are publishing Smart Stuff from our emergency spare. This means that the posting can go on as before, but that the e-mail newsletters and the RSS-feeds will be sporadic for the time being. We hope to be back up as before in a few days. Sorry! /Ed. 3 November 2006 ![]() Pens for left-handed people. This post is dedicated to the 16 percent of the world's population who, like yours truly (and among others Pablo Picasso and Jimi Hendrix), were born left-handed. It is not always easy to differ from the mainstream of the population, even tough left-handedness must be considered a minor stigma in our society compared to dark skin, curly hair, or a more severe disability. We have never been turned down in the door of clubs for being left handed, which happens all the time to people with darker skin than ours, disabilities or whose name is Mohammed. But we digress. Among all the tools for left-handed people, we have today come across this pen. It is called the Yoropen, and the trick is that the business end that writes is slightly off-center from the actual handle. This way the pen will help you avoid smearing the ink on the page. The Yoropen is available in several different versions; led pencil, "executive", multi color, and ordinary ball-point. Every version comes in different colors, too. The ball-point version is GBP 3:- on the British Anything Lefthanded webshop. 3 November 2006 ![]() Easy-pull Japanese electrical plug. Our regular readers may remember two different electrical items we've posted earlier this year. One was the plug that has a lever to make it easier to disconnect. The other, a wall socket with slanted connectors to make it easier to plug in and unplug. We like stuff that makes things easier. Recently we found this smart electrical plug designed in 1994 by (we think) Japanese A.P.I. Co. Ltd. and Yoshihiko Yamaji. It would make a lot of difference for people with reduced finger strength. We know it is not made for EU standard, but how hard could it be to adapt the idea? Via Design Boom. 1 November 2006 Smart Stuff in November 2006. Hello, and welcome to Smart Stuff number 11, 2006. As you may have read, we have been criticized for not posting enough interesting stuff on the site lately. After Heikki K's mail we put the question on the site to learn what other readers think. Some of the readers who have responded do agree with Heikki, while others do not. The common ground, however, seems to be that the number of posts in a week or month really does not matter, as long as each post is "good" and "interesting". But what is "good" and "interesting"? We went back to look over our posts from the last six months, and although some posts obviously are better, smarter and funnier than others, we have not found one that we cannot stand behind in retrospect. The answer is probably that "good" means different things for each and every one of our almost 5,000 daily readers. Everyone can't agree with us every day. Everyone can't like everything every day. And every post can't be news to everyone. So. What to do? Well, the only thing we can think of doing is to keep looking for smart products, inventions and ideas. Things we like; stuff that are new to us and appeals to our sense of "wow". After all, it has proved pretty successful so far. But at the same time we can also promise to go the extra mile to be better at finding smart products, inventions and ideas. Stuff that may help our readers avoid some of the crap shops' shelves are filled with. Thanks for reading the site. Thanks for writing us with tips and critique. Thanks for helping us make a better site. /Ed. 1 November 2005 First to know. Smart Stuff on e-mail or RSS.
