SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |..<.....3..4..5..6..7.....>...................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Pic borrowed from The Science of Cooking. Fun site on the science of cooking. Cooking is not just grinding pepper mills and wielding whisks. There is actually a lot of chemistry and physics behind all dishes and not just the fancy ones, like eggs benedict, and sole meunière. More than you might think. A lot of fun and worth knowing stuff can be found on this site. The Science of Cooking. Via GeekyKewl. 3 May 2005 ![]() More houshold tips and tricks. The fact that Nina Yunkers' books on smart tips are among our favourites should not be a secret for our regular readers. (If you just joined us, please check this link four our previous post on Ms. Yunkers' books.) We were pleased to find this latest installment in her series in our local bookstore the other day. It is full of useful tips as usual, but this time focused on cooking and kitchen. We love that. This book will answer age old questions like: What to to with crisp bread turned soft and limp (very Swedish)? What do you do when the gravy is burned to the bottom of the pan? How can you tell if the avocados are ripe and the eggs are fresh? If you are anything like us (and read Swedish), this book is a must-have. Available in bookstores or via the publishers, Bokförlaget DN, at their homepage. SRP SEK 223:- (USD 31:-) "Köksräddaren" av Nina Yunkers Bokförlaget DN 2005. ISBN 91-7588-553-0. Cover art and illustrations: Villuendas + Gomez Estudi de disseny. 28 April 2005 ![]() Our best kitchen tool. We are all in favour of good, sharp, knives. And, sure, we appreciate the julienne cutter, the zest tool and the little citrus trumpet we featured earlier. But knives, zesters and all other stuff in due respect, the one we think we would have the hardest to do without is this. The food pincers. They are great for most anything, except maybe tasting the soup. They turn the steaks on the BBQ (and rearrange the coals if need be). They pick up that annoying piece of shell in the omelet eggs. They lift a tasting piece of chicken from the wok, and they help us decide when the steak is just right. When you have had one of these for a while it is hard to do without. You try it, but remember we warned you. Available in many kitchen stores for around SEK 100:- (USD 25:-) and they are worth it. 26 April 2005 ![]() Update. Super sharp, but also super brittle. The extra sharp Accutec grater from Cuisipro, that we featured and recommended a while back has had an accident. The accident revealed a weakness in the design, that we had not noticed earlier. Since we take our recommendations seriously, we want to be sure to report the bad as well as the good news. The grater's accident was a fall from the kitchen counter on to the hardwood floor. The impact damaged the thin plastic that held the handle in place. The handle is now loose and cannot be fastened back on permanently. It is a ridiculous damage. For the price of it, the Cuisipro box grater should be tougher than this. The rest of the grater is fine, it is as sharp as ever, but it has become difficult to hold. So, if any of you readers have a grater like this, be careful not to drop it... 17 April 2005 ![]() Another really, really sharp grater. This is just one of the Microplane graters, but they are all made with the same technology. Yes, we are talking hi-tech here, and the Microplane people seems to have perfected the art of making really, really sharp edges. A while ago we presented another really sharp grater from Cuisipro and the two are both very useful in our kitchen. Available, among other places, from Amazon, for USD 14:-. 7 April 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |..<.....3..4..5..6..7.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
