SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |.<.....27..28..29..30..31.....>...........USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Corner fridge offers loads of space with small footprint. We wish we had known of this fridge when we did the kitchen. That had saved us a lot of space problems. This corner refrigerator from Norcool (in English) will accommodate no less than 1,200 liters (about as much as 3 or 4 ordinary refrigerators) and only takes a little more floor space. Compare the outline of the corner fridge (black solid line) and an ordinary 60x60 cm fridge (red solid line). Placing the fridge in a corner gives lots of extra space and, as a bonus, plenty of room for the required ventilation. The only draw-back is that there is no version with a fridge/freezer combo. That would have been the optimal solution. Who's going to be the first with a combo like that? [Via] 15 January 2006 Swift answer from the Microplane rep. Laila J. at Hamonoya ApS in Denmark (the company representing Microplane over here) writes to tell us that the mysterious breaking of our grater is the first such break she has ever heard of, and that she will send us a new grater free of charge. She also says the Microplane engineers will be all over the broken grater as soon as we can get it to them, to make sure this stays the only time such a mishap has ever happened. What can we say? This must be an exemplary way of handling a complaint like ours, and we will all be better at our business if we learn from it. We'll also be asking the Microplane people to let us know what caused the break if they can find out, 'cause we are very curious to know. 27 December 2006 ![]() Some sad news... One of our favorite kitchen tools has left us. It is one of the super sharp Microplane graters that inexplicably split just where the handle is fastened to the grater. We were grating some cheese for an omelet when the grater broke, and we promise we were not using any excessive force. As you might see from the close-ups it is the clear acrylic(?) plastic that has split. The reason for this is anyone's guess, but there might have been a tiny crack in the plastic. We will get in touch with the Microplane representative to see what they have to say in the matter... 26 December 2006 ![]() Mini omelet in sixty seconds. We bought one of these microwave egg cookers in the Technical Museum shop the other week, and we have been experimenting with different ways of cooking eggs in it since. The best so far is shredded smoked ham, some grated Parmesan hard cheese, one egg and salt and black pepper. Mix everything in the little egg cooker cup, put the lid on and cook it in the microwave for about 60 seconds on high power. This will produce a mini ham-and-cheese omelet you can have for breakfast. We got it at the museum, but they are surely available from cook shops all over the place. If not, we also found it on Amazon for USD 6:95. 30 November 2006 ![]() Measuring spoon and bag clip a-i-o. The spoon or scoop is used to measure stuff like coffee, tea, sugar, flour or most anything with the right structure. The spoon's bent handle can then be used to close the bag. This means the scoop is always on hand when you need it. The downside is of course that you have to get more than one scoop-clip or clip-spoon. But on the other hand that is not a downside for designer Jeremiah Tesolin. Photo by Chikako Harada. From Tesolin and Estadieu. There was the slanted cutting-board that collects juices, and there was the folding cutting-board. Here is another smart idea. A cutting-board with a cutaway edge that allows a plate to be placed so close you will not spill the stuff as you transfer it onto the plate. Phillip Stewart's idea is embarrassingly simple and probably not overly expensive in production. Thus an example of what we like to call smart stuff.
