SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |.<.....26..27..28..29..30.....>...........USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Kitchen sponge with smart hanger. We found this smart kitchen scrub and hanger at the Hem & Villa (House & Home) fair in Stockholm recently. The metal stick (top left in the picture above) has a suction cup in the bottom that lets you attach it to kitchen tiles or the sink. The sponge has one soft and one rough surface, and a hole in the middle to fit the stick. That way the sponge can be kept available, but at the same time out of moisture. From Swedish design firm Bosign and it was SEK 49:- (approx. USD 6:50) at the fair. 27 October 2006 ![]() Clever glass bottom springform. Frequent tipster Magnus I. B. mailed us on this both smart and good looking spring form way back in july, but it has been resting in the bottom of our mail bag since. Not counting the glass bottom, this springform is pretty ordinary, with a non-stick coating on the insidfe of the rim. But the glass bottom is the really clever part of this innovation. With the glass bottom you can serve the cake without having to put it on another plate or tray. And since the bottom is glass, you can cut the cake without fear of damaging the non-stick coat. Genious, we'd say. Magnus found the form on Canadian web shop Ashton Green where it is CAD 25:- (about USD 22:-). Thanks, Magnus, for the tip! 10 October 2006 ![]() Sauce server with built in thermos. A while ago we posted on the double walled cooking pot, that makes warming anything in hot water much easier. We have also presented the Bodum double walled thermo glasses that keeps your coffee warm (and whisky cold) longer, and a series of bowls for ice cream, salad, soup or anything else you want to keep cold or warm. Today the turn has come for this thermo sauce or server with thermo properties due to the double wall construction. Just fill the void between the walls with hot water and the ceramic server will keep the sauce warm longer. The server holds ca 4 dl (about 13 fl.oz) and it is SEK 98:50 (approx USD 13:50) at the Sparköp web shop. 29 September 2006 ![]() "Tea bag" for brewing coffee in the cup. This product, from Swedish innovations company OneCafé in Lund, was recently awarded Food Packaging of the Year 2006 in the Food Processing Awards in London, UK. OneCafé have developed a way to brew fresh coffee directly in the cup, that works something like the good old tea bag. You put the little bag of ground coffee into your cup or glass and pour boiling water on top of it. Unlike the tea bag, the OneCafé bag can be withdrawn into the packaging after use, and thus minimize dripping and stains. The coffee is Arabica AA and it comes from Elgonia, Uganda, where the coffee is also roasted, ground and packaged. 20 September 2006 ![]() ![]() Mug with clever drain - only in America? Here is an example of how different we can think and value product properties. We are assuming that the Trofe coffee mug sold in Sweden and the US in the same product, which seems probable. If so, it seems that the Americans have discovered a smart feature on the Trofe mug that the Swedes have overlooked. And that's the little cut in the bottom (left) that helps drain the mug from that annoying little pool of water that the dishwasher never seems to be able to dry out. The Trofe mug is SEK 5:- (about USD 0:68) on Ikea Sweden, but there is no mention of the little smart drain. On Ikea USA the Trofe mugs are USD 0:50 (about SEK 3:70) each.
