SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |.<.....23..24..25..26..27.....>...........USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Page clamp keeps your books open. It is called FlipKlip and it is a small clamp that you use to keep a book open at the page you need to look at when your hands are otherwise occupied. Like for instance when you are cooking. Why is it that one's cookbook always starts flipping pages by itself when one's hands are at their stickiest? According to the site, the FlipKlip could also be useful for sheet music, crossword puzzles, or when you just want to read in bed and your hands get tired. Available from Miles Kimball for USD 8:99 or from Amazon for USD 7:99. Via this cool site in Japanese. 7 August 2006 ![]() Ziploc sightings on the west coast. Yesterday we complained that the smart ziploc plastic bags still were not available in Sweden. And when we wrote it, we were sure that was the case, because we have been looking high and low for ziploc bags without finding any. After yesterday's post, however, we had mail from two of our eagle eyed readers, Johan K. and Daniel E. who independently had spotted ziploc bags from Toppits in stores. Johan K. had found his in ICA Focus in Gothenburg. Where Daniel found his, he does not say but since he too lives in the west, we will assume that is where he found them. According to the Vardag & Fest magazine site, also a tip from Daniel, the bags have been in stores since October last year. Oops. Maybe they started distribution in the west? Thanks to Johan and Daniel for their contributions! 31 July 2006 ![]() Jar with leak-proof lid. The jar is called Twist 'n Loc and it comes from Ziploc, the zipperbag people. Why we still cannot buy the smart zipperbags in Sweden is a mystery, but apparently no-one thinks they will sell. The Twist 'n Loc received an honorable mention in the ID Magazine 2006 design round-up recently. The tight fitting lid keeps the soup inside (and water out if you have some dry stuff inside), it has measurement markings and it will survive both the microwave and the dishwasher. Our guess is we cannot get this one in Sweden either, but at least we can order from Amazon, where it is USD 4:-. Via Unbeige. 30 July 2006 ![]() Kitchen sponge with hanger. The description that goes with this product is in Italian, and that is not one of the languages we are anywhere near fluent in. But, here is what we think we have been able to extract. It is a kitchen sponge or kitchen scrub of the ScotchBrite type, and you are supposed to be able to hang it up to dry when it is not in use. Maybe on the actual faucet, or on a pipe. It is designed by Carlo Contin, and the sponge is one of may new smart designs presented by Italian Coop. The page seems to be (please forgive our rusty Italian) a presentation of different design projects, and the visitor can vote for which of the products one wishes to see in the shops. The eleven best will go on to be produced and sold by the Italian Coop stores. Via Elmanco. 28 July 2006 ![]() Test your vegetables with a refractometer. Yesterday, and again today, we read a couple of quite disturbing articles in Svenska Dagbladet (Swedish only), our preferred morning read. They were about the fruit and the vegetables we eat, and about how these greens in many cases may look colorful and nutritious, but actually hardly are worth the effort it takes to chew and eat them. Many are so diluted nutrition-wise that they do not meet the standards set up for the manufacture of fruit juices. Read more on the reports on the latest edition of The Daily Lemon, back to-day from summer recess. So, what does the apparatus above have to do with all this? Well, it is a refractometer (Wiki) that is used to measure the sugar content, Brix, (Wiki) of fruit and vegetables. A high Brix number indicates, among other things, that the fruit or veggie has a sweeter taste, a higher vitamin and mineral content, does not spoil as fast, and has a better resistance to sickness and pests and thus needs less insecticides. A low Brix count is caused by, among other things, not letting the fruit or vegetable ripen, that they have not been exposed to enough sunlight, has been grown in depleted soil, or has been grown too fast. With a refractometer you can check wether the fruit and vegetables in your store is up to par. The refractometer above comes from Technika and is USD 96:- with a calibration certificate. A similar refractometer is to be found on Amazon for USD 89:-. 26 July 2006 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |.<.....23..24..25..26..27.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
