Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas.

Muji plastic wrap box and cutter

The cutting edge of plastic wrap.
This thing is so smart we wish we had thought of it ourselves. It is just a semitransparent plastic box with room for one roll of plastic foil wrap. But contrary to the boxes the foil is sold in, this one has a cutting edge worth mentioning. No more balls of foiled and spoiled foil. Just a clean cut piece of plastic cover. The box comes from the in-store Muji shop at Åhléns department store in Stockholm and cost SEK 50:- (ca EUR 5:-).

HotSpot silicone mat
Grip and protect – all at the same time.
This silicone oven mat can do at least three jobs. It can be a pot holder that protects your hands from heat up to +350°C. It can also be a trivet that protects your kitchen surfaces to the same temperature. And it can be a rather sticky non slip gripping aid for those lids that just will not budge. There are several makers of these silicone mats; this one is called Hot Spot and comes from Williams-Sonoma in L.A. It was USD 8:-.

Cuisipro Accutec box grater
Super sharp box grater.
This grater has a really professional feel. It is super sharp, and grates like nothing else. Other nice features include a clever lid in the bottom that helps collect the stuff you grate, and measuring scales on each side to let you know when you have done enough. Can not remember the price of this thing, but we seem to recall it was not cheap... Cuisipro Accutec.

Chef'n switchIT silicone spatula
Chef'n silicone spatula?
Probably. At least it out-spatules everything we have ever tried before. This is silicone over stainless steel and has a wide side and a narrow side. It is also nice to non-stick covered pots and it can be washed in a dishwasher (up to +260°C is OK). What more can you ask for? It is called SwitchIT and comes from Chef'n, known for smart kitchen stuff. It cost SEK 100:- (approx USD 13:-) at the Åhléns department store this March, and we feel it is worth every one of them. It is also available on Amazon for USD 12:59.

Vic Firth peppermill
One hand pepper mill.
The reason why most pepper grinders are made for two hands escapes us, but we guess it has something to do with tradition. So when we found this we just had to have it. Who can resist a pepper mill that lets you keep stirring while you grind? This particular mill comes from Vic Firth, a well known percussionist with the Boston Symphony (he also makes and sells excellent drumsticks, we are told by our friend J, who uses them). The mill is made from stainless steel with a smart little window to let you know when it is time for a refill. It is USD 19:99 at Vic Firth Gourmet Online Store.
