SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |..<.....14..15..16..17..18.....>..............USEFUL TIPS & TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() From kitchen towel to apron. This is a pretty smart idea, but we cannot get past the feeling we have seen it before somwhere. Maybe with those suspender type clamps instead of these steel cleats... These cleats are of course a lot better. We like it when there are as few moving parts as possible, since they have a tendency to break sooner or later. Sooner more often than later, come to think of it. This is a really good idea for all the little piggies who refuse to wear an apron in the kitchen. Now they can wear some cool towel instead of a dorky apron. And we are not talking about five-year-old kids. We have seen another idea on the same theme; the making of a simpler apron. It was at this year's Spring Show at the Stockholm College of Arts and Crafts, where Josephine Drakenberg had come up with a smart solution with her apron that stays up using a plastic strip waist band. We are not sure if Josephine's collection is in production yet or not, but the elastic apron belt above is for sale at USD 22:- (about SEK 175:-) on The Mousse Shop. Via Everything and Nothing. 31 December 2005 (New Year's Eve, no less) ![]() Silicone cable tie for the gadget gourmet. Let us make no mistake here, we are familiar with the use of both strings and toothpicks in cooking. We have been taught by some of the best (our late grandma, for one) and the strings and toothpicks have served us well all these years. No one have claimed that their proper use is a simple task, though. On occasion, we have been forced to re-tread the string or reposition the toothpicks. Well, all that is probably over, now, for here comes the Foodloop. Husband and wife team Anna and Kraigh Stewart of Atlanta, Ga. have provided the final(?) solution, supposedly the first an only silicone trussing strap. Silicone will not scratch coated pans, and it can take temperatures up to 675°F (357°C). The loop is out in stores in th US, and on the net at, among others, Sur la Table, one of our favorite stores. It is USD 14:95 (approx. SEK 120:-) for a sixpack. We think this resembles a reopenable cable tie, only for the kitchen. And since we happen to think that cable ties are all but indispensible in modern living, our bet is that the FoodLoop will be, too, before long. Via Notcot. 29 December 2005 ![]() Small muscle powered herb chopper. This little puck is one of the best gadgets we have ever bought. It is quite perfect for quickly chopping a handful of herbs for a sauce or the roasted potatoes. Just fill the thing up, close the lid, and pull a few times on the string, just like an old fashioned outboard motor. But as with the old outboard, you need the right technique to get it just right. And you will need to fill the puck rather well, beacuse it does not chop nearly as well when it is not full of herbs. Other than that, it is just great. Cannot remember how much it was, but we probably got it from Verner & Verner. It is USD 4:76 on Amazon, though. Chef'n. 28 December 2005 ![]() Can opener for left-handed people. We have had moments when we have wished we were right handed like everyone else. Much in life would have been less complicated that way. But as we have learned to live in a right handed world, we have also found more and more tools that work equally good for both persuasions. One sore spot has been the can opener. We cannot begin to describe what a pain in the proverbial behind a can opener made for right handed people is for the rest of us. It has to be experienced first hand. The only solution for a long time was an antique that was screwed to the bottom of a kitchen cabinet. But it was kind of hard to bring along on holidays; a time when you might need it the most. So it was a big day when we found the EZ Squeeze from Chef'n, and it has become one of our best kitchen tools since. You just squeeze the can tight to the cutting wheel, and pump the handles to open it. Works really well, as does most other things from Chef'n. 25 December 2005 ![]() ![]() Elegant 18th century stool and stepladder. This both smart and elegant chair and stepladder is manufactured after a design from the latter part of the 18th century. It was designed by a man famous for other things but who, being a true renaissance man, excelled in many fields of life. His name was Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and among other things he discovered that lightning carried a current (which led to the invention of the lightning rod), he designed a much improved iron stove, bifocal glasses, he jointly founded the first hospital in the US, organized the postal service, founded the first volunteer fire company, and the first libraries. The chair/ladder was probably designed for the libraries. Through folding the back forwards, you get at huch higher step-stool than the usual ones. And the chair, well you can use it as a chair. Made from hardwood with oak or white finish, the Franklin library ladder USD 149:- at, among other places, Stacks and Stacks.
