SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | KITCHEN |..1..2..3..4..5.....>...........................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen and cooking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kitchen and cooking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() ![]() Soft closing cupboard doors on a budget. Would you like to have soft closing doors on your kitchen cupboards, but are hesitant to shell out for an entirely new kitchen? Then we have an idea for you. This little shock absorber from Blum is the gadget your kitchen salesman will be reluctant to tell you about. (Well, face it, he would rather sell you a brand new kitchen.) This thing mounts in several ways. We chose to drill a 10 mm Ø hole in the frame of the cupboard, but you can always use one of the available adaptors that fit the pre-drilled holes in most modern kitchen cupboards. They are about SEK 30:- (approx. USD 3:80) each, and available both from Clas Ohlson and Theofils beslag. 13 March 2005 ![]() Crème brûlée torch. Like crème brûlée? Then you can not be without this little blowtorch. Without it, it is all but impossible to get the right hard but brittle sugar surface on your brûlée. It is also very useful for adding the final touch to gambas, gratins and other dishes that need a little spash of color. You fill it up with everyday lighter gaz and it is available in plastic for about SEK 200:- (USD 25:-) and in aluminium for about SEK 400:- (USD 51:-). Clas Ohlson. 4 March 2005 ![]() Lemon trumpet. This cheap little thing is one of the best we have ever spent our hard-earned on. You are looking at a citrus trumpet, and it is used to squeeze the juice out of a lemon. You screw the toothy end into the lemon and squeeze and - presto! - there is the juice coming out of the funnel. Great for anyone who uses lemon in cooking. Between meals you just store the trumpet and lemon in the fridge. We got ours from Crate & Barrel, but our good friend T, who grew up in Louisiana, says they have been using devices like this in their household for ages. 18 February 2005 ![]() Are these the best oven gloves so far? They may not look much to the world, but we are willing to bet a buck or two that they are the best oven mitts in the world. Why? Well, first of all they are knitted from Nomex, which is a fibre developed by DuPont to be heat- and fire resistant. Nomex® is used, among other applications, in protective clothing for firemen and race car drivers. The mitts are made with a double shell, the inner for fit and the outer to take the brunt of the heat. They will protect your hands up to +350°C (640°F) dry heat, but they cannot protect against hot fluids or steam. Hot water, for instance, will seep right through the rather loose knit. We have had ours since spring of 2004, and they have worked well both in the kitchen and at the BBQ. They outperform anything we have had before in the way of oven mitts, and the only drawback is that they get quite dirty after a while. But they can be washed without losing their heat protection. Coolskin. 1 February 2005 ![]() Messermeister serrated peeler peels tomatoes. This peeler may look like any other, but there is a big, big difference. This one has a serrated blade. Now, this may not seem like a world of difference, but we can assure you it is. With this you can peel fresh tomatoes. we can not actually remember anything that does that with any kind of ease, except this. It comes from Messermeister and it was USD 5:50 at Sur la Table in San Fransisco. The peeler is also available from Amazon, where it is USD 5:50:-. 23 January 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES |..1..2..3..4..5.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
