| SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | CHILDREN |..<.....4..5..6.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff children's section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for kids and parents. ...![]() Collapsible cart. For some reason we have an affection for everything collapsible, so when we got a mail from Karin Frykberg, inventor of the Drago collapsible cart, we took a look at once. We have actually had our eyes on the Drago cart for some time, ever since we first saw it at an exhibition at the Stockholm Technical Museum, but not gotten around to posting a story on it. We thought it was pretty smart back then, in particular for boating, camping or holidaying in the islands where there are not cars. For some reason it has been sitting in our in-tray until Karin's mail got us going. So here it is. The Drago. Invented by Karin Frykberg of Västerås and for sale on Drago's own web site for SEK 695:- (about USD 95:-). Available in red, blue or black. 28 September 2006 Note: We're thrilled when inventors want to present their inventions on our site, and we welcome contributions. Don't be shy, send us an e-mail with pictures or links to your best inventions. send your contributions to info@smartstuff.se. We don't charge for postings here on Smart Stuff, but we do reserve the right to pick and choose among contributions. That's life, so please don't get cross if your invention does not make it. Send us another, instead! Love, /Ed. ![]() Test vegetables and fruit with a refractometer. Yesterday, and again today, we read a couple of quite disturbing articles in Svenska Dagbladet (Swedish only), our preferred morning read. They were about the fruit and vegetables we eat, and about how these greens in many cases may look colorful and nutritious, but actually hardly are worth the effort it takes to chew and eat them. Many are so diluted nutrition-wise that they do not meet the standards set up for the manufacture of fruit juices. Read more on the reports on the latest edition of The Daily Lemon, back to-day from summer recess. So, what does the apparatus above have to do with all this? Well, it is a refractometer (Wiki) that is used to measure sugar content, Brix, (Wiki) of fruits and vegetables. A high Brix number indicates, among other things, that the fruit or veggie has a sweeter taste, a higher vitamin and mineral content, does not spoil as fast, and has a better resistance to sickness and pests and thus needs less insecticides. A low Brix count is caused by, among other things, not letting the fruit or vegetable ripen, that they have not been exposed to enough sunlight, has been grown in depleted soil, or has been grown too fast. With a refractometer you can check wether the fruit and vegetables in your store is up to par. The refractometer above comes from Technika and is USD 96:- with a calibration certificate. A similar refractometer is to be found on Amazon for USD 89:-. 26 July 2006 A. ..B.![]() C. ..D.![]() Stain-eraser. We will admit right from the start that we did not believe in this product. Not one bit. How could something erase stains (A)? But the thing was pretty cheap, and our sand colored shorts just got some stains in the butt (B), so we might as well give it a try. So we got the Fläck-suddare (literally Stain eraser) out and started working on the smaller stains in the top right of picture (B). And much to our surprise, the stain remover delivered (C). As soon as the small stains were gone, we went to work on the whole area, and even though it did not get the stains out to a hundred percent (D), the results were good enough to save the day. And that is what we think this thing is; a day saver when you are traveling or just out of the house. It is small and practically weightless, so there will be no trouble bringing one. The Stain-eraser is made of melamine and apparently the fibers of the eraser are small enough to get into the grooves of the cloth and get the dirt out. It comes from Be:son Gross in Varberg. It was SEK 12:- (approx. USD 1:60) for a two pack at Gahm's near Hemse in Gotland. We dare claim that it is practically impossible not to catch a cold in daycare. And this goes for kids, parents and teachers alike. Lena Sonesson (above) with 30 years of experience in daycare has had innumerable colds. Now she has come up with an invention that can help solve the problem of bacterial transfer between kids, staff and parents. It is a smallish plastic bag in which to put used tissues. The bag has a collar with a membrane filled with a disinfecting alcohol gel. Every time you put your fingers into the bag to put away a tissue, your fingers also get a brushing with the gel. The tissues stay in the bag, and when it is full it goes to incineration. Lena Sonesson is currently looking for a manufacturer and marketer of her invention, but we do not think it is going to be a very hard sell if the price can be kept reasonable.
