Lillian Vernon bike repair kit in a "water bottle".
Bike repair kit in a "water bottle".
We are pretty easily excited when it comes to fun tool kits like this one. They do not even have to be disguised as something else, like this one is, but that just makes it more fun. Here you will find most, if not all, you need for a quick on the road bicycle repair; bit screw driver handle, 6 bits, 6/15-mm ball wrench, 3 hex wrenches, 2 tyre irons and a flat repair kit with glue. The bits are stored under the lid and the rest of the stuff is inside the "bottle". It can be put into an ordinary water bottle holder, and you could use the included special fastening bracket. with a thing like this, maybe, maybe we could avoid having our tools stolen. From Lillian Vernon web-shop where it is USD 20:-. Via Boing Boing.

Carshare - to have a car but not the trouble.

Carshare - to have a car but not the trouble.
It's been almost a year now, since we sold our latest (or maybe it was the last) car to join our local carshare program instead. So far it's been brilliant. If you're new to the concept, carshare is a way of having access to a car (or actually several cars) when you need one, but not having to deal with most of the problems associated with car ownership. Our carshare scheme, for instance, have three different types of cars to choose from (small, medium and large), a simple on-line booking system, and great availability. How the financial side of the project will turn out is too early to say for sure, but this far it looks like we have gotten away a lot easier than last year. Environmentally, though, we feel like winners already, partly because we do not drive as much as we used to, and partly because most of our miles have been with the ethanol (E-85) powered cars. Now that our carshare updates the fleet, both the mid sized car (Ford Focus FlexiFuel) and the large car (Saab 9-5 BioPower) will be environmentally up to date.

Shredder scissors.

Shredder scissors.
Smart Stuff reader Rich M. sends us this tip about a smart pair (well actually there are five pairs) of scissors. Here's the ultimate invention for people who may want to shred the occasional document, but sees no need for a big electric shredder. The shredding scissors have made the rounds, but we thought that the Smart Stuff archives could not be without it. Available from a Japanese office- and computer stuff web-shop (we think) but it is all Japanese to us, unfortunately. However, the Gizmodo blog has somehow managed to find out that the thing is JPY 2,010 ( about USD 17:- ).

Ergon bicycle grips by Ergonomidesign

Ergon Grips. A new way of looking at bike grips.
These bike grips from German biking accessory firm RTI Sports, recently awarded the Swedish Design Award, have reportedly been successful due to their new and ergonomically smart design. The grips, made for mountain bikes, have several new features, among them a larger support surface that distributes pressure and reduces wrist strain, integrated, easily adjustable bar ends, and rubberized surfaces in different softness and friction. The Ergon grips have also been in ESPO and Red Dot. From RTI Sports GmbH. Design by Ergonomidesign. Via Swedish Design Award.

Shoulder Saver strap leveller

Keeps your shoulder strap in place.
Since the human shoulders slope downwards (oh, c'mon admit it), the strap to the messenger bag will tend to slip downwards and fall off. This can be countered by slightly rising the shoulder with the bag, but this will not only make you look hunchbacked but also put a strain on your back. Not good. The solution could be this invention, the Shoulder Saver, that goes on your shoulder strap and levels out your slope (yes, you have one). Available in black or yellow for USD 14:- from Herrington. Via Book of Joe.
