SMART STUFF #1, VOLUME 2. JANUARY 2006 |..1..2..3..4..5.....> A. B.![]() Two takes on snow shovels on wheels. Our place is smothered in something like 8 inches of snow. It has made a fluffy cover on all horizontal surfaces, and it sparkles very nice in the sun. However it is not so pretty when you have to shovel it away from your driveway, so we have taken a closer look at two snow shovels with a different approach. Maybe something for next Christmas? The one on the right (B) is the Wovel and it is a pretty new invention (we think). We saw it for the first time sometime last summer, but the time was not quite right for a show shovel post, so we saved it for later. The Wovel wheeled shovels have a single large wheel that is supposed to roll easier in the snow and to give the shoveller som extra momentum. It is kind of hard to explain how the Wovel works, because it is so different, but the Wovel site has videos for the interested. The left shovel (A) goes for two small wheels, and it seems to us that it is more meant to push the snow away than to actually throw it aside. (A) is USD 60:- (ca SEK 465:-) at Whatever Works. (B) is USD 150:- at Wovel's own site. 6 January 2006 ![]() Do the Cinderella with the dusting mitts. This looks like a hands on approach to cleaning and dusting. The mitts are called Touch to Clean and they are made using one of these fantastic microfibers that literally eat dust and dirt. We have a few microfiber cloths in our cleaning cupboard and they really are incredible. The idea with the mitts is that they will let you go where a cloth or mop cannot go, or at least that it should be easier to reach those places. They are supposed to be useable both wet and dry, and when they are dirty you are supposed to be able to turn them inside out and continue dusting. (How it would feel to stick your hands into the dirt inside the mitts, is not explained.) The dusting gloves are promised to be lint free and machine washable. All for just USD 13:- (pretty spot on SEK 100:-) a pair at Whatever Works. 5 January 2006 ![]() Solar powered LED garden spotlight. The usual solar powered garden lights are not very bright, in our experience. They are probably made more for marking pathways, than for illumination. In those cases when you have wanted more light, you have had to resort to ordinary electrically powered lights. Here is a reasonably green alternative that lets you get away from digging trenches across the lawn. A solar powered spotlight. We can think of a dozen places where this thing would be just great. The spotlight has a built-in light sensor that turns it on at dusk and off at dawn, but there is an ordinary switch as well. How this light will perform under our low light conditions in the winter, we dare not say without a field test, but we would not keep these things outside during the winter anyway. The case is waterproof and frost resistant ABS. The thing is USD 25:- (approx. SEK 195:-) at Whatever Works. 4 January 2005 ![]() How to make the perfect pie. Ever wondered how those nice lattice work pie covers are made? No? Well, we have. And now we know. There is a special tool. The special lattice pie cover maker is USD 6:- (approx SEK 47:-) at Home Marketplace. And we have been struggling with those strips of pie dough all these years... 4 January 2005 ![]() The go everywhere wheel chair. This must be just great for everyone with a disabled family member or relative. We know from friends that going to the beach or the woods with an ordinary wheelchair is no picnic. With this chair you can go almost anywhere, to the beach all the way down to the water's edge, through the forest, in the snow; probably most anywhere you can think of. And probably a lot of places you have not even thought of before. The chair is called Landeez, and the manufacturer promises that the soft pneumatic plastic tyres not only will make the travel easier, they are also supposed to give a smoother ride. At USD 2,255:- (approx. SEK 18,000:-) plus shipping at Landeez, the chair is not cheap, but considering the alternative, maybe it is afforable anyway. Via Coolest Gadgets. 1 January 2006 News on Smart Stuff, January 2006. Let us first say welcome back. We hope you will want to follow us again this year, and we can promise a lot of exciting new smart stuff in the near future. We have also made some changes to the site, that we would like you to know about. We now have a feed. You will find the symbol and link to the feed in our mast head. We made a trial run during december, and it seems to be working fine. The feed is so far available only in English, since we have had great demand for a feed from our international readers and almost none from our Swedish readers. On the other hand the e-mail news letter seems to be more popular with the Swedes. We will be introducing advertising on the site in the near future. They will be placed in the right sidebar and will be introduced with the new CSS based platform that is in the works. We have decided to discontinue the design section, but the pages already published will be kept on the site for the time being. The reason for this is that the main page deserves our undivided attention now that readership is up to numbers we never thought possible. This is also the page we think we do best. The links and blog roll are gone from the left side bar. They are in the works to be re-vamped into a new page of their own with room for explainations to every link. This will make our favourite sites easier to find, and do them better justice, we think. Thank you for reading all this. Now let's get on with the actual blogging, shall we? /Ed.
