Welcome to the Smart Stuff internet section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions, services and ideas on the internet. Also browse the "Useful tips and tricks" page for some clever and useful ideas.

Cool idea if you have your own site or blog.
If your site or blog is anything like ours, you get quite a lot of visitors who just check out the current page (i.e. this one) and then move on to some other site. But what if we could send our leaving visitors to you and you could send yours to us? If our blogs have anything like the same visitor numbers, we could double them! Now there is actually a way to do this, and it is called ExitExplosion. Corky name, perhaps, but the tech seems solid. Here is how it works: They put up an exit page on your site that offers alternative sites to visit after yours. And since everyone else in the program displays your site among the alternatives, you look to get a lot of new visitors to your site. Check it out on ExitExplosion.

...

Looking for waterfront property? Check this site first.
There are quite a few indications that the melting polar ice caps and glaciers will cause the sea level to rise. So if you are about to sign a contract for some sea-front real estate, you may be well advised to think it through one more time. One day you may end up with more sea than property. On the Flood Maps site they have used Google Maps and NASA's topographical data to illustrate how the world's coast lines will change with every meter of sea level increase. Living in Stockholm, we don't seem to run the risk of getting our feet wet. But for those contemplating beach front property in the popular resort towns of Skanör and Falsterbo in the south of Sweden, a bit of caution may be advisable. The left map shows the present coastline. The right one the coastline after a 1 meter rise. And, if you live in Denmark, Britain or Holland you should really have a look... [Via]

Design your own name plate over the 'net
Design your own name plate over the 'net.
It's clearly nicer with real name plates, or door plates, than taped calling cards or pieces of paper. But at least around here, they have not been easy to find, or have made. There are plenty of engravers that do so-so work, but the really good ones are hard to find. Now we can design and order our very own custom name plate directly over the 'net. The service is run on the domain Dörrskylt.nu and the UI allows you to choose from a number of straight or ornate plates, choose from a number of type faces, and see how the thing will look when finished. Plates are available in brass, oxidized brass or white from SEK 349:- (about USD 48:-) for a smallish shield shape to SEK 389:- (about USD 53:-) for a large rectangle like the one above.

TravelPosts list of Wi-Fi access in American airports

Finding Wi-Fi in American airports.
This is perhaps made mostly for the Americans, but since there are quite a lot of foreigners like ourselves also using U.S. airports, we are posting it for everybody's benefit. Here is a list of 141 airports all over America, with notes on if there is Wi-Fi available, if it is free or how much they charge, who the provider is, and in what areas (like gates, terminals, etc) service is available. In the screen capture above you can see that Los Angeles (LAX) charges USD 9:95 a day. (as a comparison Stockholm-Arlanda, our home airport, charges SEK 50:- (about USD 6:80) for a half hour if we remember correctly). Las Vegas-McCarran (LAS), on the other hand, are kind enough to allow free use of their net. It surprised us that a large place like Miami (MIA) (not in the picture above) does not even have a Wi-Fi net available! The list is published by the TravelPost site, that also offers hotel reviews. Via BajoCoste (in Spanish).
