Jörg Gätjens chair with coat hanger
Chair with built in coat hanger and night stand.
Now you have no excuse for throwing your clothes in a pile on the floor anymore. Instead, now you can hang them proper like a gentleman. It is Jörg Gätjens again. We found this on his site last night, but thought we would keep it for a slow news day... but what the... it is too good not to post. This chair can be a coat hanger, a night stand, it has a bowl for your jewelry or glasses, and the seat is really a lid covering an extra storage space. The only thing we miss is a stick across the back to hang our pants on. Then this thing would be perfect. Apart from the price tag, that is. Available at German store Details for EUR 375:- (approx. USD 442:-).

Jörg Gätjens new/used matches matchbox
Smart matchbox.
While we are on the subject of matches, we have always had a hard time to stand people who put used matches back into the box. Not only do they expose the rest of us to the risk of accidental fire, the used matches mess up the box and make the new ones dirty with soot. This foul practice should have been brought to an end years ago. That is probably why we like this invention so much. Joke or not, it is a great idea by German designer Jörg Gätjens, who has been smart enough to clearly indicate where the used matches should be placed. This invention may be welcomed by the match industry, too, since it gives them an excuse to ship only half as many matches in each box. Via Husmusen.

Jeremy Walton candles with built-in matchboxes
Candle and matchbox combo.
Reader Thomas C. drops a tip on these fun and smart candles he has found on the 'net but has no further information on. We have researched a bit, and the candles are designed by British designer Jeremy Walton, now living in Denmark. Immediately upon his arrival in Denmark, Walton was taken in by the Danish notion of cosines, hygge, which often incorporates the use of lighted candles. He decided to facilitate the lighting of said candles by casting a small matchbox at the base of each candle. Thanks for the tip, Thomas! Crafts Collection.

A.Snapalarm smoke detector B.DuPont self-charging smoke alarm

Smoke alarm without batteries.
We, and many with us, think the Snapalarm smoke alarm (A) that just snaps to the light cable is pretty clever. Imagine no drilling. And no climbing ladders to change the batteries. Great. But before we have had a chance to post the story, we find this (B). No drilling. And no batteries to change. Even greater. As simple to install as screwing in a light bulb. It charges its internal battery whenever the light is on, and it needs two hours of light to last a week in darkness. You check and reset alarms with a couple of flicks of the light switch. The DuPont™ Self-Charging Smoke Alarm is USD 39:95 at among others the First Street net shop. Wonder if there is a version for Europe? The Snapalarm is available from, among others, Designtorget at SEK 349:- (approx. USD 43:-). Via Treehugger.

Stirex self-opening scissors
Self-opening scissors.
Reader Magnus I. B. have contributed the following tip and review. Magnus writes (in our translation/Ed.):

"Swedish Stirex makes a clever pair of scissors. No loops to wiggle your thumb and forefinger into, just grip and cut. Unlike other self opening scissors, this one has no dirt collecting spiral spring, which makes it ideal in the kitchen. The intended buyers for these scissors are people with muscle atrophy or some other disability, but why could not the rest of us benefit from this convenience, too? :-) I have two of these at home (that way one is always available) since five or six years back. The leaf spring can be turned around, too, so it will not get exhausted. Available at Apoteket (Swedish pharmacy /Ed.). At Elfa (electronics specialist /Ed.), search for stirex), there are variants made for tech use, like pliers, wire cutters and ESD-protected scissors. I have no personal experience with these, though."

Thank you, Magnus! There is not much to add, other than maybe that us south-paws are especially pleased to find a way to avoid those "right-hand-ergonomical" scissors that never fit and are a pain to use. Next stop is the pharmacy! /Ed.
