SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | HOME | .1..2..3..4..5.....>..............................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff home and home improvement section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for home and home improvement. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() Picture is a scan from Metro Hus&Hem 22 April 2005. Staircase storage idea wins prize in Ikea competition. This storage shelf idea will most likely become a world hit. Why? Well, (1.) because it is clever and lets us use space hitherto unavailable (always a good thing), (2.) because it will be reasonably priced (Ikea), and, (3.), because it most likely will be distributed through one of the world's largest sales systems (Ikea again). Inventor is Johan Sandström and his idea was judged one of three best out of some 8,000 entries in Ikea's inventor's competition "Fiffiga folket" (Clever People). The two other happy winners are Per Nyman (metal spring cable collector) and Jon Karlsson (adjustable shelving system). The winners get SEK 25,000:- each (if Ikea was not Swedish, it would be Scottish) and a chance to see their ideas in mass production. It is obvious that there are still a lot of clever people out there who are just waiting for a chance. Now there are just a couple of questions left: (A.) The winners were all men. Where are all the women inventors? (2.) Why does not Industriförbundet or some other body start a nationwide competition with real prizes plus development- and production support? Now, if just 8,000 entries produced three ideas this good, how many would not result from, say, eight million ideas? If you read Swedish you can download a PDF version of the issue of Metro Hus&Hem. 23 April 2005 ![]() Newspaper collection box. Most of us with at least a minimal sense of environmental protection will most likely have a pile of old newspapers in the kitchen or by the door. This is neither practical nor does it improve the look of your home sweet home. Now there is a somewhat stylish way to correct this, by Swedish designer Carina Ahlburg. Her cardboard container (above) is perfectly sized to take a normal Swedish paper grocery bag. In this bag you place your old newspapers when you are through with them. When the bag is full, you take it to your neighborhood recycling center and replace it with another. No more ugly pile of newspapers. Just a rather stylish box. Available at Swedish design store Designtorget. 3 April 2005 ![]() House keeping tips and tricks. Why put garlic in your plant pots? How do you remove tobacco smell in your living room? These and many other questions get answered in these two books; "Goda råd är inte dyra" and "Goda råd i rättan tid", both by Nina Yunkers. Both books are filled to the brim with tips on everything that makes the party more fun, the house cleaning more efficient, your garden prettier, travel easier and your food more palatable These books have had a place within easy reach in our home ever since they were published. They have some dog ears and stains by now, and we cannot remember how much they were any longer, but they have been worth every penny. Writing this we realize we are writing in English and the books are in Swedish. But maybe you know someone who can translate? "Goda råd..." by Nina Yunkers Norstedts Publishing Company 1996 and 1997 respectively. ISBN 91-1-962702-5 and 91-1-970812-2 respectively. 17 March 2005 ![]() ![]() Soft closing cabinet doors on a budget. Would you like to have soft closing doors on your kitchen cupboards, but are hesitant to shell out for an entirely new kitchen? Then we have an idea for you. This little shock absorber from Blum is the gadget your kitchen salesman will be reluctant to tell you about. (Well, face it, he would rather sell you a brand new kitchen, or?) This thing mounts in several ways. We chose to drill a 10 mm Ø hole in the frame of the cupboard, but you can always use one of the available adaptors that fit the pre-drilled holes in most modern kitchen cupboards. They are about SEK 30 each (USD 3:80), and available both from Clas Ohlson and Theofil's. 13 March 2005 ![]() Food cooling dome. It is called the Cool Globe, and we think it is, too. Inside the top of the dome there is room for one of those freezable plastic bricks you use in cooler bags. And since colder air tends to sink in relation to warmer air, your salad, cake or whatever is under the dome will be kept cool and fresh. Inventor Birgitta Folcker-Sundell received the City of Stockholm Inventor Scholarship for the Cool Globe as well as plenty of well earned attention both domestic and foreign. 8 March 2005 THIS SECTION HAS MORE PAGES | .1 .2..3..4..5.....> DEPARTMENTS | APPAREL | APPLIANCES | BAR | BBQ | BICYCLE | CAR | CHILDREN | COMPUTERS/TELECOM | CULTURE | DVD | EDIBLES | ENVIRONMENT | FLASHLIGHTS/TORCHES | FOOTWEAR | GARDEN | HOME | INTERNET | INVENTIONS A-Z | KITCHEN | KITCHEN FURNITURE | LEISURE | LINKS | META | MISC. | MOTOR CYCLES | OUTDOORS | PETS | PERSONAL CARE | PHOTOGRAPHY | READER'S CHOICE | SAFETY AND SECURITY | SERVICES | SMART STUFF aSTORE | SOLAR POWER | SOUND AND MUSIC | SWEDISH | THIRD WORLD | TRAVEL | TOOLS | VIDEO | WATER | WORK TIPS AND TRICKS | APPAREL | BAR AND DRINKS | BICYCLE | CAR AND DRIVING | COMPUTERS | CULTURE AND LEARNING | GARDENING | HOME | INTERNET | KITCHEN AND COOKING | OUTDOORS | PETS | TRAVEL | WORK AND BUSINESS Did you find the information on this site useful?
