SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | BBQ & GRILL |..1..2..3.....> Welcome to the Smart Stuff BBQ section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for grilling and outdoor cooking. ![]() Hand powered grill blower. BBQ season will soon be upon us, and with it the usual struggle with uncooperative charcoals. However, this year there is help in the form of this little invention; the hand cranked grill fan from Fackelmann. It will help us get the embers started and dinner ready in time. We found it at the Clas Ohlson store, and it was about SEK 100:- if we are not mistaken. Soon it will be allowed up from the basement again. 14 April 2005 ![]() Vic Firth one hand pepper mill. The reason why most pepper mills are made for two hands escapes us, but we guess it has something to do with tradition. So when we found this we just had to have it. Who can resist a pepper grinder that lets you keep stirring while you grind? This particular mill comes from Vic Firth, a well known percussionist with the Boston Symphony (he also makes and sells excellent drumsticks, we are told by our friend J, who uses them). The mill is made from stainless steel with a smart little window to let you know when to re-fill. It's USD 19:99 at Vic's own net-store. 16 March 2005 ![]() Cool Globe protecs and cools. It is called Cool Globe, and we think it is, too. Inside the top of the cooling dome there is room for one of those freezable plastic bricks you use in cooler bags. And since colder air tends to sink in relation to warmer air, your salad, cake or whatever is under the dome will be kept cool and fresh. Inventor Birgitta Folcker-Sundell received the City of Stockholm Inventor Scholarship for the Cool Globe as well as plenty of well earned attention both domestic and foreign. 8 March 2005 ![]() How to grill small food. This skillet came into the home at about the same time as the mitts below; just as the BBQ season was starting last spring, and it has been a valued addition to the outdoor kitchen ever since. We use the perforated skillet to cook shrimp, veggies and other small food that is virtually impossible to cook on the BBQ since they have an irritating habit of slipping through the grid and ending up in the coals. We got the pan from Bed Bath & Beyond in L.A. last spring, but we saw others like it for sale in this country too. If they sold, we do not know, but they should have. If you can't find any, there's a similar pan on Amazon for USD 16:-. We are looking forward to getting ours out again this spring. 2 February 2005 ![]() Is this the best oven glove so far? They may not look much to the world, but we are willing to bet a buck or two that they are the best oven mitts in the world. Why? Well, first of all they are knitted from Nomex, which is a fiber developed by DuPont to be heat- and fire resistant. Nomex is used, among other applications, in protective clothing for firemen and race-car drivers. The mitts are made with a double shell, the inner for fit and the outer to take the brunt of the heat. They will protect your hands up to +350°C (640°F) dry heat, but they cannot protect against hot fluids or steam. Hot water, for instance, will seep right through the rather loose knit. We have had them since last spring, and they have been serving both in the kitchen and at the BBQ. They outperform anything we have ever had before in the way of oven mitts, etc and the only drawback is that they get quite dirty after a while. But they can be washed without losing their heat protection.
