SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | GARDEN |..<.....3..4..5..6..7.....>......................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff garden and gardening section with some of the world's smartest stuff, tips and tricks for gardening and cultivation. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas. ![]() The horticulturist's own garden gloves. Not only electricians get fed up with their professional apparel. And not only electricians decide to do something about it. Here is an example of how a horticulturist (gardener, then) gets fed up with her work gloves that are not fit for a full day's work, and designs her own garden glove. Reportedly the horticulturist in question (Harriet Z.) tried a pair of 50's dress gloves and found them a perfect fit. The only draw-back was that the dress gloves of course did not last very long doing gardening work. Enter new materials (supplex and spandex) applied to the old pattern, and presto the Foxglove was born. Available in different colors from Foxgloves for between USD 25:- and 30:-. Via Book of Joe. 20 February 2006 ![]() Smart crowbar tick tool. We do not know how common this is, but we are among the people hos totally hate ticks. These revolting bugs who suck our blood and infect us with disease. A recent bout with Borrelia has not exactly endeared us to the disgusting critters, either. A good tick remover is a high priority piece of kit with us, and one is standard equipment in our outing kit and bathrooms. We have probably tried all the available tick removers in the market, but we have never found a really good one. The other day we found this, though, and it is one we have not seen before. The two (sold in sets of 2) hooks, reportedly invented by a French veterinarian, are different sizes to work on both small and larger ticks. Recyclable plastic. Made by O'Tom and sold by Amazon for USD 3:95 (approx. SEK 30:-). Via Cool Tools. 9 February 2006 ![]() Solar powered LED garden spotlight. The usual solar powered garden lights are not very bright, in our experience. They are probably made more for marking pathways, than for illumination. In those cases when you have wanted more light, you have had to resort to ordinary electrically powered lights. Here is a reasonably green alternative that lets you get away from digging trenches across the lawn. A solar powered spotlight. We can think of a dozen places where this thing would be just great. The spotlight has a built-in light sensor that turns it on at dusk and off at dawn, but there is an ordinary switch as well. How this light will perform under our low light conditions in the winter, we dare not say without a field test, but we would not keep these things outside during the winter anyway. The case is waterproof and frost resistant ABS. The thing is USD 25:- (approx. SEK 195:-) at Whatever Works. 4 January 2005 ![]() Recycle your soda bottles. This seems to be both elegant, simple and affordable. That is what we call smart stuff over here. According to reports, a young Swiss designer won a prize with this idea at a home appliance fair in Milan recently. As far as we can tell from the pictures, it seems to be well earned. It is called Twist & Spout (sometimes they are so funny you can hardly keep your posture) and is supposed to fit most any water or pop bottle in the market. With the smart spout the bottle becomes a low cost plant watering device. Good for the hibiscus. Or, in our case, the herbs. We have a bit of an issue with plants that are not fit to eat. The spout is available in different colors and two different sizes; big and small, from USD 4:99 (approx. SEK 40:-) at Perpetual Kid. Via Book of Joe. 29 November 2005 ![]() Wheeled garden weeding seat. We know it is not exactly in season (at least not where we live) but we also believe there will be another summer next year. So, if you have ever crouched over weeding your flower beds for about half an hour, you are in a position to appreciate this invention. At least once you have been able to straighten out your back. So smart. So simple. So back saving. Really nothing much more than a tractor seat on a four wheeled frame with a small tool tray slung under it. Clever. The wheels are reasonably big, 10", so they will not get bogged down in your lawn, the seat adjusts up and down and swivels 360°. The contraption does only travel in a straight line, though. Maybe they decided to keep it simple, after all. It will set you back USD 54:50 plus shipping, but what if it will save you some chiropractor's bills?
