Welcome to the Smart Stuff garden and gardening section with some of the world's smartest stuff, tips and tricks for gardening and cultivation. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas.

Clas Ohlson weatherproof cable joint
Cable joint weather protection.
This must be just the thing, now that the outdoor lighting season is here. The cable joint pod is meant to protect the connection where you have joined two power cables together. All you have to do is pull the ends inside, connect and close the protective pod. It is supposed to keep the weather outside of your joint, thus ensuring safe operation without shorts. As long as you DO NOT use it as an excuse to use indoor cables outside, we are sure it will be great. Probably available at most hardware or electrical stores. We found it at Clas Ohlson, where it was SEK 39:- (approx. USD 5:-) a piece.

Flexi-Pave rubber asphalt

Rubber asphalt lets water seep through.
Rubber asphalt is a pretty smart invention i our book. Not only does it make a slightly soft and springy surface to run or walk on, it also uses up some of all the discarded tires that otherwise would be a big eco problem. This kind is called Flexi-Pave and can be poured in place. It lets water seep through, does not crack or form potholes. It is used for sidewalks, footpaths, praking lots and driveways. It is around USD 6:- per square foot. Via Treehugger.

Sporty's firewood cart

Smart firewood cart.
The odds for a long and cold one is something like even money. At least up here close to the arctic circle. So this might be a time to re-think how that lovely firewood is going to come into the house this year. One way is of course the old firewood basket and the obligatory lumbago. But maybe we should try something new? Like the Log Cart above. Able to carry 200 lb. (90 kg), it would save quite a few trips to the wood-shed and hopefully a lot of back-ache in time for X-mas. The cart is made of aluminum tubing and has 14 inch wheels. Available at Sporty's for USD 95:-.

Solar powered LED garden tiles

Solar powered LED light garden path tiles.
For those among us who want a lighted garden path, but do not want to dig up the lawn to lay the cables, here is an alternative. Say hello to the SolarBrick solar powered light tiles. The SolarBrick is a 60 mm (about 2.4 inches) thick polycarbonate tile with four LED lights, a solar cell and something called a capacitor, a device that apparently does the job of a rechargeable battery, only better, since it does not have to be changed every 3-4 years. The SolarBrick is said to deliver twelve hours of light in exchange for one hour of sunlight or eight in the shade. The tiles are strong enough to be driven over, and are supposed to last ten years without maintenance. They are available with blue, green, orange, white, red or amber light. We have found them at Solar Vereld in Holland at EUR 195:- a piece. Expensive? Maybe, but how cool would it be?

Stilic Force instant trash container
D-I-Y garden trash can.
This is clever. And simple. And has plenty of "why did I not think of this"-potential. Just like smart stuff should. We found it at Stilic Force, but there is not much information on the site, except that it is two feet high and designed by a certain "M. Milin". We have not found it for sale at any of the web shops listed, so we do not have a price. It seems to consist of a flexible sheet of plastic that you put inside an ordinary trash bag. And, presto! There you have an improvised wastepaper basket of sorts. When it is full you pull out the plastic sheet and throw tha bag in the trash. And what if there was a bigger plastic sheet, say four feet, to turn those big plastic garden bags into trash cans for the garage or garden...
