Welcome to the Smart Stuff flashlights section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas in flashlights (torches) and other portable lighting.

Powerflare emergency LED lighting
Heavy duty LED emergency flares.
We know these clever light pucks have made the rounds already, but hey, why should we give up a good thing when there must be millions of people who have never seen them. And besides, these guys will make a nice addition to the Smart Stuff Archives, don't you agree? In the US, where the guy who invented these things live, there seems to be a rule that cops should really illuminate accident scenes. They would not settle for the measly warning triangles we use. No way, they break out the flares, and the roman candles and a lot of other things that shoot sparks and fizzle in the night. This is all very pretty, but not entirely safe with people and damaged cars around. So one of the cops invented these. Powerflare. They are really bright, the can survive being run over by a truck, and they are easy and fast to deploy. We were thinking party lights, but perhaps they are a bit too expensive for that. USD 44:95 (ca SEK 360:-) a pop. But they are available in blue... Via Red Ferret.

SR Electronics LED ring lights for digital cameras SR Electronics LED ring lights for digital cameras SR Electronics LED ring lights for digital cameras

Ring flash (or ring light) for digital cameras.
Back in the analog days a ring flash was a pretty cool thing, when you were looking to get those really close close-ups. That and a reversal ring for the lens got you really close. In the digital age, maybe this thing can be a good replacement. For the first(?) time there is also a model available for compacts. SR Electronics e-mails us to say they are introducing this new series of three LED ring lights. The smallest one (left) has 24 LED's and fits compacts. The two other ones are made more for digital SLR's and sports hot-shoe conections, continous light, light intensity control, and half- or full light intensity. Great stuff, but not exactly cheap. The little guy is USD 150:- (ca SEK 1.170:-) and the big boy is USD 290:- (ca SEK 2.275:-).

EarLite flashlight

When you need both hands - a true story.
We bought one of these EarLite things a couple of years ago in the US, but we had all but forgotten about it until the other day, when it really got a chance to show us what it was made of. The old daisy-chain of Christmas lights had to be put up on the balcony handrail, and of course we managed to put off the job until daylight was gone. This is not all that hard, since lights out for the day occur at about 15.30 hrs over here at this time of year (thats 3.30 PM if you are on the AM/PM clock). Well, after some freezing wrestlig with the tangled cables, there it was in all it's glory. Sort of, anyway, since part of the chain remained dark. Luckily, the chain is made in sections, and only 16 lights out of 100 had to be examined. When this happens you can go about fixing it in different ways. The quick-fix method calls for replacing all the lamps and checking for the broken one in the house afterwards. But to do that we would have needed 16 spare lamps we did not have. Back to checking which one was broken; not a very pleasant job in the freezing darkness. These lamps are really tiny. That was when we remembered the EarLite. We got it and less than a minute later we had found the offending lamp. Brilliant. Cannot remember where we got it (could have been at the Brookstone store in Santa Monica), but a similar light is USD 12:- (ca SEK 95:-) at Essential Gear.

A.Camera Bright X1-R original LED light for digital cameras B.Camera Bright X1-W warm white LED light for digital cameras C.Camera Bright X1-ER extended range LED light for digital cameras

Small digital camera lights.
Back in the day when we were into photography on film, we always tried to avoid using a flash, even if the light was very low. Longer exposure time, larger opening, light sensitive lenses and film, a small tripod, and some patience often helped compensate. But with our current digital camera (a Nikon Coolpix 4800 ED bought mainly for the 8,3X zoom) it is not as easy to get out of using a flash. We guess it has too many automatic functions. Maybe these little LED lights from Camera Bright could be a solution? (A) X1-R original. Slender beam, color temperature ~6,000 Kelvin, 36 candelas (cd) of light power, and a 5ft. x 5ft. coverage area and a 12 ft. range. USD 29:95. (B) X1-W warm white. For portrait photography and video. Diffused LEDs, color temperature ~3,000 Kelvin, 25 cd light power, a 4ft. x 4ft. coverage area and 10 ft. range. USD 29:95. (C) X1-ER extended range. Extra light power for longer distances. lslender beam, color temperature ~6,000 Kelvin, 72 cd light power, a 6ft. x 6ft. cm coverage area, and a max. 20ft. range. USD 34:95.
