SMART STUFF #12, VOLUME 1. DECEMBER 2005 |..1..2..3..4..5.....>
DuPont battery free smoke alarm.![]() Yaktrax traction soles. This is not just for your grandma, if you thought so. These Yaktrax no-slip soles are rubber nets whith steel springs that fit over (or rather under) your shoes, giving you traction on ice and packed snow. We would strongly advice, however, to remove them before entering a room with hardwood floors. Available in several stores in Sweden, among them the Addnature web store at SEK 248:- (approx. USD 30:-) a pair. 3 December 2005 A. B.![]() We, and many with us, think the Snapalarm smoke alarm (A) that just snaps to the light cable is pretty clever. Imagine - no drilling. And no climbing ladders to change the batteries. Great. But before we have had a chance to post the story, we found this (B). No drilling. And no batteries to change. Even greater. As simple to install as scewing in a light bulb. It charges its internal battery whenever the light is on, and it needs two hours of light to last a week in darkness. You check and reset alarms with a couple of flicks of the light switch. The DuPont Self-Charging Smoke Alarm is USD 39:95 (approx SEK 325:-) at among others the First Street net shop. Wonder if there is a version for Europe? The Snapalarm is available from, among others, Designtorget at SEK 349:- (approx. USD 43:-). Via Treehugger. 2 December 2005 ![]() Stirex self opening scissors. Reader Magnus I. B. have contributed the following tip and review. Magnus writes (in our translation/Ed.): "Swedish Stirex makes a clever pair of scissors. No loops to wiggle your thumb and forefinger into, just grip and cut. Unlike other self opening scissors, this one has no dirt collecting spiral spring, which makes it ideal in the kitchen. The intended buyers for these scissors are people with muscle atrophy or some other disability, but why could not the rest of us benefit from this convenience, too? :-) I have two of these at home (that way one is always available) since five or six years back. The leaf spring can be turned around, too, so it will not get exhausted. Available at Apoteket (Swedish pharmacy /Ed.). At Elfa (electronics specialist /Ed.), search for stirex), there are variants made for tech use, like pliers, wire cutters and ESD-protected scissors. I have no personal experience with these, though." Thank you, Magnus! There is not much to add, other than maybe that us south-paws are especially plased to find a way to avoid those "right-hand-ergonomical" scissors that never fit and are a pain to use. Next stop is the pharmacy! /Ed. 1 December 2005 ![]() Inventor's showroom. We have been meaning to post about this page for some time, but we have not gotten around to doing it. Until now. The Swedish Inventor's Association, (where we by the way have the privilege of being a member) has a page where inventors can advertise their products for a reasonable fee, the Inventor's Showroom. This page has some interesting stuff. Unfortunately it is only in Swedish at the moment, but most of the different entries have links to their own web sites in both Swedish and English. Some of this stuff has not even hit the stores yet. By our last visit (yesterday) we found no less than fourteen smart Swedish inventions, well worth having a look at. Go see! 1 December 2005 New on Smart Stuff in December. In December we take the opportunity of introducing two new categories; Environment and Swedish. The reason for this is that we have blogged an increasing number of eco related products and smart Swedish inventions lately, and we want to make them easier to find. We also want to sum up the year by inviting all our readers to participate in deciding who will win the Smart Stuff Readers Choice Award 2005. It will only take a few minutes, and to make it worth your while (we hope) all participants will have a chance to win one of the two super-peelers from Messermeister that we have managed to lay our hands on. This smart peeler was our very first post on Smart Stuff back in January, and now we have gotten two brand new, super sharp serrated peelers for you to win. The polls are open until midnight on December 20, and the winners will be notified no later than midnight on December 24. Jump over to the polling page, and cast your vote now!
