SMART STUFF | BICYCLES AND BIKING |..<.....5..6..7..8..9.....>..............USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS

Welcome to the Smart Stuff bike and biking section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas for bicycle and biking. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas.

Lumb-R-Grip self fastening hook

Hook on bike hanger.
If you have a garage or garden shed with reasonably dimensioned rafters (looks like a 2x4 in the picture) you can hang your bike, tools and other stuff from the rafters without having to drill one hole or screwing one single screw. The answer is called Lumb-R-Grip and it is a clever hook that attaches itself to the rafter and that sticks harder the heavier the stuff you hang on it. If there are versions available for bigger rafters, we do not know, but these are USD 12:- for four on Amazon.

Bike helmet with built-in LED lights

Bike helmet with built-in LED light.
Kerry H. writes to let us know about this bicycle helmet, apparently the only one of its kind with its integrated rechargeable LED lights. Kerry is the director of the company that sells these helmets, and of course he writes to promote his own stuff, but we think his helmet is smart enough to have a place on our pages anyway. The helmet has red LED's in the back and a white LED in the front, and will greatly improve visibility on the road. It seems to be sold primarily to police or emergency services, but we want one anyway. USD 69:99 on IH Technology.

Lillian Vernon bike repair kit

Bike repair kit in a "water bottle".

We are pretty easily excited when it comes to fun tool kits like this one. They do not even have to be disguised as something else, like this one is, but that just makes it more fun. Here you will find most, if not all you need for a quick on the road repair; bit screw driver handle, 6 bits, 6/15-mm ball wrench, 3 hex wrenches, 2 tyre irons and a flat repair kit with glue. The bits are stored under the lid and the rest of the stuff is inside the "bottle". It can be put into an ordinary water bottle holder, and you could use the included special fastening bracket. with a thing like this, maybe, maybe we could avoid having our tools stolen. From Lillian Vernon web-shop where it is USD 20:-. Via Boing Boing.

Ergon bicycle grips by Ergonomidesign

Ergon Grips. A new way of looking at bike grips.
These bicycle grips from German biking accessory firm RTI Sports, recently awarded the Swedish Design Award, have reportedly been successful due to their new and ergonomically smart design. The grips, made for mountain bikes, have several new features, among them a larger support surface that distributes pressure and reduces wrist strain, integrated, easily adjustable bar ends, and rubberized surfaces in different softness and friction. The Ergon grips have also been in ESPO and Red Dot. From RTI Sports GmbH. Design by Ergonomidesign. Via Swedish Design Award. Ergon Grips are available from, among other places, Amazon, where they are about USD 30:- a pair.

Blackburn AirFix bicycle tool and tyre inflator

Bicycle tool with built-in CO2 tyre inflator.

The Blackburn AirFix sports nine different bike tools all bundled around a carbon dioxide (CO2) tyre inflator. It has a pressure reglulator to keep you from overinflating your tyres, and a safety switch to keep it from going off in your pants. The rest of the goodies are 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm Hex's, a Torx T-25, chain tool, tyre tool, and both Phillips and plain flat screwdrivers. The miracle machine is charged with 16 gram Blackburn or Innovations cartridges. Via Everything and Nothing.
