GastroNord - food industry and restaurant fair
Mingeldags party plate
Party plate 2.0.
Back in November last year we posted a piece on the James party plate from German design firm Sternform, and we thought it was a pretty elegant solution to an old problem. Yesterday we ran into this (above) idea during our walkabout on Gastronord, the hotel and restaurant fair in Stockholm. It is a Swedish idea, kind of a party plate 2.0 if there can be such a thing, with more features than previous competitors have had. Or what about holders for wine- beer- and (this is a Swedish innovation after all) a snaps glass. Or a clever grip inspired by an artist's palette, that makes the thing steadier than before. Or holders for both fork and spoon? Available in three versions, different colors, and it can be both recycled and washed in a dishwasher. From Swedish MingelDags from EUR 1:85 (about USD 2:30).

A.Tie organizer B.Belt organizer

Tie organizer and belt organizer.
We have seen the belt hanger (B) before, but at the time we totally missed its brother, the tie hanger (A). Both are (with a collapsible coat hanger cousin) part of firm Orkan's travel acccessories line. All the hangers are designed by David Larsson (more on him on Cool Finds) and they are made in anodized aluminium. The belt hanger was SEK 89:- (approx. USD 12:-) when we saw it last on Resklar.

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser
Love hamburgers? Read this book and be cured.
A couple of years have passed since we read Eric Schlosser's first book; Fast Food Nation, but it seems as current today as it was then. The honest-to-God- truth is that this reporter did not eat burgers, chicken nuggets or any junk food for a couple of years after putting Schlosser's book down. We were shaken. The book is a sharp report on fast food; its construction, flavoring, production and marketing and the growth of an industry that has generated huge profits but left customers and society with the tab for an obesity- and diabetes epidemic we have yet to see the full effects of. Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. A must read. In Schlosser's latest book, Chew on This, (not published as this is written, but available for pre-order) he gives further insights into the industry that probably has changed the way the world lives more than any other. Also check out this post on The Daily Lemon.

Early container attached to a truck
The container – 50 years old this week.
Hardly any innovation has had the power to change and simplify world trade like the modern cargo container. And this week it can celebrate its 50th birthday. Creator of the container was the American trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean who came up with the idea in 1956 when he got tired of waiting in line in the harbor. With the standardized containers loading and unloading a ship is infinitely easier than in the old days. Instead of several weeks to unload a single ship, the work is now accomplished in less than 24 hours. But the container, although a blessing for world trade, has become something of a curse for shipping. Every now and then container ships lose one or several of their cargo containers, and those containers will often float semi-submersed for a long time, due to the quantity of air inside. Every year several ships are reportedly damaged in collisions with floating containers, and there's even those that claim that a number of unexplained shipping losses can be attributed to collisions with such containers.
