SMART STUFF #4, VOLUME 2. APRIL 2006 |..<.....4..5..6..7..8.....>![]() Travel toothbrush with toothpaste storage. We should have had a couple of these on our trip recently. There are few things as refreshing as a good brushing of the teeth after a long flight. Our last longish flight was with British Airways, and they supplied a small kit with, among other things, toothbrush, toothpaste, earplugs, eyeshades, and a pair of soft socks. This time we flew with Austrian Airlines, and they had nothing like that. With this travel toothbrush, though, you load up the handle with your favorite toothpaste (a bit like filling up an old fashioned fountain pen), put the brush on and click the top shut. When you want to brush, you turn the bottom of the handle to dispense some paste onto the bristles. There is even a little window to let you check the remaining toothpaste level. The Ohso toothbrush is the size of a really fat fountain pen and it will be yours for USD 19:95 plus shipping on Ohso's website. It is called Un-du, and according to art teacher Duffy Franco (who sent the tip to Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools) it is pretty amazing. This stuff can remove stickers from just about any surface without leaving any traces. According to Duffy, the first commercial for the stuff showed how they removed duct tape from a piece of toilet tissue. Without damage to either. Available from Amazon at USD 8:99. Via Cool Tools. 13 April 2006 ![]() Reservoir plant watering device. We have seen several plant watering devices, but this one is a bit different, since it allows adjusting (3). When you have fastened the air tube (1), you screw the top onto an old water- or soft drink bottle (2). Then you adjust the amount of water by turning the knob on the side of the nozzle (3) and stick the nozzle into the flower pot (4). After that you do nothing until it is time to fill up with water. We have found it at Tree Help for USD 11:95 and at Grow Organic for USD 5:95. Both seems to offer the same pack of six, but as you can see, their pricing differs a bit... 13 April 2006 ![]() How about this as the Official Smart Stuff Shirt? Everything and Nothing has found this wonderful pocket studded Swiss Army shirt on Victorinox. We had no idea the Swiss Army was into fashion, but now that we know, we have an almost irresistible urge to make this the Official Smart Stuff Shirt. It's full of features; how about these: "Light activated, anti-microbial, self-cleaning finish, Victorinox multi-tool pocket (of course), tear down utility pocket (whatever that is), camera strap restraint, 6 film canister pockets (well, we've gone digital), vertical zip pocket, passport pocket, roll up/button sleeves, mesh ventilated side panels and epaulettes. We love it, but we would perhaps get the sand colored one. Victorinox. Via Everything and Nothing. 12 April 2006 ![]() Trombe wall - solar heating without solar panels. Already 400 years BC, Socrates suggested that houses should be oriented towards the South. That way the Sun's warmth would reach far into the rooms through the open doors, and the clay or stone walls and floor could store heat to release it during the night. In some modern solar houses, there is a wall of concrete or bricks just inside a large glass wall. Such a wall is called a Trombe wall. Using a Trombe wall could be a way to take advantage of solar energy without installing solar panels. The idea was first patented by Edward Morse as early as 1881 (US Patent 246626), but was ignored until 1964, when it was made popular by Felix Trombe and Jacques Michel. In short, the idea is that the concrete or brick wall stores the heat during the day, and releases it during the night. It does require well designed ventilation and insulation to work efficiently, but the idea seems like pure genius to us.
