SMART STUFF | ARCHIVE | APPLIANCES |..1..2..3.....................................USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS Welcome to the Smart Stuff kitchen appliance section with some of the world's smartest gadgets, inventions and ideas in stoves, ovens, microwaves, dishwasers, etc. Also browse the useful tips and tricks page for some clever and useful ideas for kitchen and cooking. ![]() Microwave and TV combination. Love it. Many people want a kitchen TV, but not many have enough room to get one in without making the kitchen look crowded. And you do not want the tube to take space you need for stuff you really need in a kitchen do you? Maybe Dutch designer Marcel Wanders had this in mind coming up with the idea of a microwave with a flatscreen display and a DVD built into the door. We would probably not care much for the DVD, but with an ordinary tv tuner it would be very practical. So what are Samsung and LG, who have come up with some cool stuff recently, doing? What is Philips, who could use a little image boost, waiting for? They are after all a Dutch company. Get a move on! Via Everything and Nothing. 10 January 2006 A. B.![]() Dishwashers with independent drawers. This nice looking dishwasher (A) comes from New Zeeland appliance manufacturer Fisher & Paykel and is pretty cool. It has two independent washing trays that would let you keep clean dishes in one, and put the dirty dishes in the other. This could mean that you do not need kitchen cupboards, since all your dishes are in either of the dishwasher's drawers all the time. Or, that you could preserve energy and the environment by washing delicate stuff in one drawer and really dirty stuff on a heavy duty cycle in the other. The DishDrawer has yet another feature we like; the drawers that replace the common large hatch. As far as we know, Fisher & Paykel has no representation in Sweden, but perhaps Danish Witt Hvidevarer in Herning can help. The machine in the picture above is called DD603 IR and cost DKK 12,995:- (approx. USD 2,100:-). Via Boing Boing, who had a piece on a similar dishwasher from Kitchenaid (B) at USD 1,500:- (approx. SEK 11,900:-). At far as we know the Kitchenaid dishwashers are not available in Sweden, either, but maybe Sebastian AB in Stockholm will know more. Update. 9 December 2005: Robert W. drops a mail to say that the F&P is available in Sweden. Robert writes (our translation): "The Fisher & Paykel dishwasher you posted in November is displayed at Dala Hemma in Barkarby (Stockholm) in their showroom. Incredibly cool. I was playing with it for quite a while." Thank you, Robert, for the heads up! 23 November 2005 ![]() Cool drawer fridge. Say hello to the Sub-Zero 700, possibly the coolest fridge (or fridge-drawer) thus far. We are amazed that this coolness has eluded us all these years, but that seems to be the case, since the firm Sub-Zero Freezer Company just this year is celebrating their tenth anniversary with the Sub-Zero 700 line. Why don't we have these fridges and freezers here? Where have Electrolux, Miele, LG and Poggenpol been keeping their heads all these years? Up their behinds, being satisfied with marketing freezers that dispense ice and cold water? When they could have been kicking ass with these? The question now, of course, is who is going to be the first with the drawer fridge. We are standing in line to be the first test kitchen. The fridge from Sub-Zero earned an honorable mention in ISDA's and Business Week's Idea Awards 2005. Design by Jerome Caruso Design, Inc. 19 October 2005 ![]() The hot fridge - fridge with a hot plate. When a refrigerator cools down stuff on the inside, the compressor radiates heat on the outside. That is why fridges and freezers need a couple of inches of space in back and on top; to vent the excess heat. Apart from adding some heat to the room, this energy is for the most part wasted. But now Korean designer and inventor Hae-jin Kim has come up with a way of maybe putting this wasted energy to some good use. His Hot Fridge has the condensator placed on top of the fridge, which means that you can use the radiating heat to keep food warm, for instance. Smart.
